After two years of buildouts, construction, permits, and anticipation, Whiskey Business Wicker Park is finally open. The new concept from Cheesies owner, Chris Johnston, will be giving Wicker Park something it is much need of: an awesome rooftop bar. After hosting a soft opening for friends and family, the restaurant was officially open for business last Friday.
The restaurant was originally intended to be a fry bar, but after looking at Executive Chef Cory Farmer’s menu, it is clear the direction changed to be a little more upscale. Adventurous items include a crab cake stuffed burger, a turducken burger, and a grilled octopus salad, in addition to 14 fry bar flavors, and a variety of house brined chicken tenders. Not to mention an impressive whiskey list (well, of course!) that has over 100 types of whiskey.
Whiskey Business is sure to be the hot spot in Wicker Park this year. The restaurant itself has a beautiful downstairs bar, the back wall heavily emphasizing both a love of whiskey, and a love of the 80s and 90s—think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figurines, the infamous leg lamp from “A Christmas Story”, neon lights. You get the picture. Huge TV’s hang over exposed brick, making it the perfect spot to come watch sports year round, while listening to your favorite 80s and 90s throwbacks.
Upstairs the restaurant boasts a second bar, as well as the pièce de résistance—the huge rooftop overlooking Milwaukee Ave., big enough for crowds up to 120 people. While Chicago winter has the space covered in snow, we can look forward to the endless possibilities in the summer. Huge outdoor TVs are mounted on the walls, and outdoor couches take up the floor space; surely they will have a movie night! Even better, there have already been talks about weekend rooftop yoga, once the brunch menu has debuted. This Bitch cannot wait!
On the Friday opening night, the place was packed. In the dead of winter, if Whiskey Business can draw huge crowds, no doubt that in summer this is going to be where the party is at. Get excited to come jam out to Spice Girls and Backstreet boys, while sipping on frozen adult beverages (courtesy of the restaurant’s slushie machines!) in the open on the awesome roof! Fun decor, great ambience, awesome tunes, and a space to be envied seems to be a recipe for success for this new space.
