This Week in DC: Nov. 10-16

Well, wasn’t that just a gorgeous fall weekend in the District? Cori Sue and I had a blast running the Pacer’s Veterans Day 10k yesterday. Cori Sue, of course, crushed it. I staggered across the finish line a full 10 minutes later, but still made it under my goal!

Here’s to an awesome week of more fall fun—and celebrating our amazing veterans, too! Don’t miss the giveaway for tonight’s event.

Serious stirring and shaking is about to happen tonight, thanks to Speed Rack, the all-female speed-bartending competition that raises money for breast cancer. The fourth global tour kicks off in Washington D.C. tonight at the Howard Theatre at 6 p.m. Contestants will compete in timed heats to make rounds of cocktails, culled from a list of 50 accepted industry-standard classic recipes and they don’t know what they’ll be mixing. Then their entries are rated on both time and accuracy by a panel of esteemed judges, including DC’s own Jamie Leeds, Chef & Restaurateur, Hank’s Oyster Bar. Click here for information.

Bitches Who Brunch is giving away a pair of tickets! To win, simply comment here and tell us what’s your favorite cocktail in D.C. and where to find it.

It’s Veterans’ Day! And if you’re one of the lucky souls who have the day off, I suggest you camp out on the National Mall nice and early to get a good spot for the epic Concert For Valour that’s about to go down. Broadcasted live on HBO, the concert will have headliners like The Black Keys, Bruce Springsteen, and Carrie Underwood. Make sure you plan ahead; get all the details on where to go here.

Wednesday evening we’ll be at the March of Dimes 18th Annual Signature Chefs Gala. The city’s culinary masters join together for an elegant evening of wine, cocktails and dining. More than 40 of the area’s celebrated chefs, mixologists, bartenders and vintners offer up their dishes and cocktails, while you peruse auctions with unique dining, entertainment, travel and leisure packages. All proceeds benefit the March of Dimes. Tickets are sold out, but you can still attend by sponsoring the event here.

Our favorite real estate firm, Beasley, is hosting a fall celebration Thursday evening at Sixth Engine. The company just opened a new office in Old Town Alexandria, to complement their already bustling downtown D.C. outpost. The fabulous group of realtors gathers together past and current clients on the regular for fabulous shindigs. Get in touch with them to get an invite.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the Picnic Theatre Company returns with its ‘cocktail party theater for charity’ to Dumbarton House in Georgetown, with a three-night run of H.G. Wells’ classic “War of the Worlds.” Guests will enjoy music, cocktails and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. in Dumbarton House’s historic Bellevue ballroom, and a one-hour performance at 7:30. Proceeds benefit Dumbarton House historical preservation and education programs, and Advancing Girls Education in Africa to purchase bicycles, school supplies and uniforms for girls in Malawi. Tickets are $12 in advance, get them here. 2715 Q Street NW.

All this weekend, Union Market is hosting Fifth Street Folly, a weekend-long street party. The weekend will feature several signature fashion and food-oriented gatherings throughout the district; the market’s free Thread series, Bluejacket’s first ever pop-up beer garden, the ticketed Gilt Sample Sale and the EmporiYUM food festival. It’s going to be an awesome time to be there, so don’t miss it. Details for all the events here.

I am obsessed with my Dagne Dover tote—it not only fits absolutely everything (we’re talking laptop, camera, wallet, sunnies, and all of life’s needs) but it’s waterproof and stain-proof, too. The New York company is going on tour this weekend with a trunk show at Georgetown’s Urban Chic boutique. Stop in to see what all the fuss is about and enjoy 25% off any full-price Urban Chic denim or clothing item with a Dagne Dover purchase. 11 to 5 p.m. RSVP here.

Brunch, of course!

We’re already thinking about NEXT Sunday’s brunch. Join us for brunch at the new Second State on Nov. 23! We’ll be hosting a Stately Affair where girls in dresses will receive a complimentary Veuve Cliquot and men in jackets will receive a complimentary glass of dad’s hat rye whiskey. We can’t wait to check out the gorgeous new downtown spot, and we hope you’ll join us! Make reservations for you and your friends here.
