I just landed back in the District after two blissful weeks of trotting about four European countries. I am recharged and ready to jump into fall (oh yes, it’s nearly fall; it’s Labor Day weekend already!). Here we go …
With the RNC in full swing in Tampa (except for the, err, hurricane day) and the DNC coming up soon, those of us left in D.C. are gearing up for the election by hunkering down at the bar, of course. The Lobby Bar at PostScript in The Madison hotel is offering two distinct cocktails now through the inauguration—the Massachusetts Mule (raspberry-chocolate-mint-infused vodka, lemon, lime and ginger-ale) and The Great Debate (small batch bourbon, blended vermouth, green chartreuse, orange peel). 1177 15th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20005.
It’s the final Tuesday to catch an ‘80s Movie Under the Stars at Bethesda Row. The shopping destination has been showing classics on Tuesday evenings free of charge—plus free popcorn, too. Tonight at dusk (around 8:45 p.m.) watch Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey do their thing in Dirty Dancing. Retailers and restaurants are also offering special deals and menus for the occasion.
If the weather cooperates, I’ll be stretching it out at Yoga in the Park in Dupont Circle. The event, hosted by Lululemon of Logan Circle is totally free—you just bring your mat. Check here for updates.
Have you signed up for the Prevent Cancer 5k yet? If not, join our team! Those who have signed up for Sept. 30 race at Nationals Stadium get a free drink ticket for the Thursday evening kick-off bash at George. Join us and the Young Professionals of the Prevent Cancer Foundation at 7 p.m. 3251 Prospect Street NW, Washington, DC 20007.
It’s the final summer evening of Jazz in the Sculpture Garden, so don’t miss this one. The free summertime staple lets you enjoy the music, the grass, and the wine over a picnic from the Pavilion Cafe. The concert series features an array of jazz artists performing a range of styles—from swing to progressive to Latin—from 5pm to 8:30pm. Free, and open to the public.
Still in D.C. for Labor Day weekend and need a cocktail? Get one from Brennan Adams, beverage manager at A BAR, the new small-plates cocktail lounge at 2500 Pennsylvania Avenue NW inside the newly renovated boutique hotel Avenue Suites. He’s representing Washington, D.C., in GQ Magazine and Bombay Sapphire Gin’s Most Imaginative Bartender Competition next week in Las Vegas. Try his Bittersweet Shimmer, the cocktail he has created specifically for the competition, before it goes before the judges.
It’s not truly a Labor Day weekend unless you’ve stuffed yourself silly on barbecue and burgers. This Sunday, head to Policy at 5 p.m. for the restaurant’s second annual Burger Bash. You’ll get to see local movers and shakers stuff their faces in a burger eating contest, plus PBR and Jack Daniels specials. The burgers are $5 a pop and there will be a dressings bar so you have your patties how you like ‘em.
