In high school I had multiple off-the-shoulder tops, which I thought were oh-so risqué. I loved the trend—and I saved several in hopes it would resurge.
In fashion as in life, what goes around comes around—and off-the-shoulder tops are back—and super popular right now.
This summer, I incorporated two off the shoulder blouses: one in chambray, one in white, and I’ve found I can wear them with everything. If you’re going to add anything to your wardrobe this summer, make it an off-the-shoulder blouse in a solid color and a bright pair of flat statement sandals. You’ll get endless use out of both!
I snagged this particular top, a chambray ruffle from Zara, for a whopping $40 and I’ve worn it a dozen times—that cost per wear is epic! Worth noting, I took the top to South America, where it worked with shorts and skirts in Brazil and then with leather pants and jackets in the much colder Argentina.
In addition to a go-to chambray, I’m lusting after whimsical, vintage-inspired off the shoulder tops with big sleeves and ruffles. Tops with personality, that will pair perfectly with my go-to summer bottoms: white denim and espadrilles, or my Citizens of Humanity cut offs and flats. I’m obsessed with these colorful totes from Mar y Sol, which are crafted by hand by artisans in Madagascar. I’ve used it as a beach tote, a market tote, and a picnic tote, as pictured here, filled with fresh blooms from UrbanStems. My personal favorite summer bouquet is the Jackie, which is filled with bright, bulbous blooms like roses, Gerber daisies, succulents and Calla lillies.
A note on beauty, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve been experimenting a bit more with hair and makeup. I’ve always been a clothes horse, but I’ve never worn much makeup or ever change my hair. I’m proud to report I’ve finally joined the legions of women who contour and balayage their hair—despite my grumblings that the Kardashian klan engage in both activities.
I let the pros do the work: after a visit to the gals at Sephora and several hours of watching YouTube videos from tween superstars, I learned how to contour. I will say, it’s helped me understand my bone structure and appear less tired after a long night (of work or cocktails!)
Meanwhile, I turned to Logan 14 to dye my virgin hair and I was thrilled with the results. My dark hair has an oh-so-subtle ombré that’s shiny, natural and catches perfectly in the light. I love it—and I’m pleased I don’t look like a skunk!
A little lightness in the hair, sunkissed shoulders, and off-the-shoulder tops, voilá, summer!
