I’m relieved that there finally is a diagnosis to my overwhelming urge to jump in flannel jammies, add Pumpkin Spice seasoning to everything, and break out my over-sized cashmere for a stroll through Central Park before the first leaf has fallen—it’s called Compulsive Fall Disorder.
I know I’m not alone. Now that it’s officially mid-October and finally becoming chilly along the East Coast, it is socially acceptable to proudly adorn ourselves in one of the season’s signature patterns, plaid.
When it comes to this traditional print, establishing a focal point is key. Highlight one piece of your overall look in plaid—whether it is your shoes, skirt or blazer—and neutralize the rest of your outfit with muted tones. Camel, black and gray are especially complementary and offset the busy-ness of the print.
Color tones are important to find your favorite fall plaid; save the pastel prints or gingham for the warmer summer months. Tis the season so play up this autumn look with cable knits, faux fur and broken-in leather; and don’t forget every fall lover’s best accessory—the PSL.
Although plaid is most commonly found on typically casual items such as button-down shirts and scarves, don’t be afraid to dress it up! I love a pop of plaid on a crisp night out on the town with leather leggings, a statement clutch and mile-high stilettos. It’s easy to fall into the trap of an all-black ensemble for girl’s night, so incorporating the plaid trend is a perfect way to add rich colors and stand out from the crowd.
