When I was in high school, I was cast as Gymnasia, the intimating dominatrix, in a musical called “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The role included singing, a whip, and lots of leather. The grandparents didn’t get an invite to the show that year.
Although, I now only (rarely!) crack the proverbial whip, I do like to dabble with leather, especially in the fall.
Leather can be tricky to pull off without channeling your inner Gymnasia, or looking like a motorcyclist. Which is why we’re loving the idea of incorporating the trend this fall by way of a feminine staple: the skirt.
Pencil skirts are one of my go-to styles – from work functions to brunch, the timeless staple is feminine and means business. I instantly fell in love with this deep hunter green leather pencil skirt from Zara because it embodied the trifecta – an unexpected color, leather, and a fitted shape.
The tricky part about pencil skirts is figuring out how to tuck in your top without encountering visible lines or wrinkles through your skirt. I’m going to let you in on one of my best kept secrets: the man-repelling bodysuit, pictured below. I ease in and out of my leather skirt (and jeans occasionally) without anyone knowing that I’m actually wearing a leotard underneath. We loved incorporating a darker shade of summer’s hottest color, blush, to transition into the fall trend. Side note: try to go to the bathroom before getting dressed.
Leather pieces make a bold statement, so we’re also loving pairing the trend with equally bold jewelry, like the Alexis Bittar statement necklace and modern gold hexagon bangles from Ralph Lauren.
I’m usually a sucker for anything that combines style and comfort, which is how these black suede Seychelles made it into my suitcase from a trip to LA. The block heeled mules are comfortable, easy to take on and off, and go with everything from jeans to a leather skirt.
