Did you wear scrunchies as a kid? I had a bag of scunchies—decorated in puff paint—that I would pull out every morning and enthusiastically select one to match my outfit. Well, lucky for me—and despite what Carrie Bradshaw might have said—scrunchies are back. No, really, they are!

Scrunchies—along with big hair, hoop earrings, neon, high-waist denim, windbreakers, and mentally sound Republican presidents—are one of the many things I relish about the 80s. As I was pulling together inspiration for my spring must-haves, I was constantly inspired by the 80s—laid-back American style with personality. Sneakers, high-waist denim and athletic-style jackets, as well as hoop earrings.

As we well know, I love shopping and all things DC, which is why I was thrilled to hear that  local retailer South Moon Under was opening a store in Georgetown in March. While the retaler is know for affordable, Boho-style clothing, it sources a wide variety of brands, styles, and prices—and it is a consistent go-to when I need a last-minute piece to complete an outfit, a cute swimsuit or top before a vacation, or a gift for someone special. The stores have adorable notebooks, jewelry, and cheeky accessories that make it a great gift for you or a friend.

For the affordable shopper, there are cute, inexpensive brands like ASTR & Free People. I tend to have a bit more expensive taste, but appreciate that I can go high and low. I was in need of a lot of spring things—so I placed a massive order from South Moon, and I could not have been more excited when it all arrived.

These Citizens of Humanity high-waist denim fit like a glove—I ordered one pair of denim, and it fit like a dream. When does that ever happen? Along with Paige, Sevens, and Current Elliott, Citizens has been a go-to denim brand of mine for more than a decade—and this is why. While the light color and high-waist makes this pair on-trend for spring, they’re neutral enough that I’ll wear these flattering jeans for seasons and years to come.

(Pro tip: South Moon Under has killer sales on denim on the reg—keep an eye out!)

Given spring is on the horizon, I paired my light-waisted denim with a white eyelet blouse—and coordinating scunchie. The scrunchie plus gold hoops adds a playful element that suits my personality without being too much.

I paired my South Moon Under look with my favorite new Clare Vivier navy leather bag—round bags are super in this season, as are mules. Like the trusty high-waist denim, the navy leather bag and a pair of leather mules were on-trend investment pieces I’ll want to wear beyond the season.

Most of these pieces are available at South Moon Under—shop them online, below, or visit the store in Georgetown.
