The Fashion Menu: August

Where has the summer gone? It is hard to believe that it is already August; summer truly does just fly by. Here in Chicago, we especially are conscious of how short summer can be, seeing that we truly look forward to the sole three months of sunshine, after having to suffer through muggy weather and below freezing temperatures the rest of the year.

Summer wardrobe essentials should always include some nautical-inspired attire. My friend Erika, fellow blogger babe and the lovely lady behind Babeskills, is one awesome fashionista. I admire her style and her wardrobe, and raid it almost any chance I can get. From killer body suits, to a simple tee shirt, jeans and heels combo, she has made looking chic effortless. Recently she took a trip to Italy with her husband, right before we had decided to collaborate on a fashion photo shoot, since I have been begging her to style me for some time.  When she returned, there was no doubt about what theme to go for with our looks this August.

I have recently been opting for off the shoulder tops, crisp whites, and neutral tones. I love incorporating light denim in to my wardrobe as well, or the occasional striped shirt to complement a basic white skirt. Meanwhile, Erika wore a fabulous, vertically striped romper while on vacation; we both love nautical styled looks. Whether you are spending the last bit of summer at your family’s lake house or Lake Como, we are loving how light denim, crisp whites, navy blue, and sea-side stripes pair so well together. Hence why this month our August Fashion Menu shares the perfect lakeside looks. Check out our favorite pieces and accessories to achieve this look as we say “Bon Voyage” to summer.

Just like Erika, NYC Editor Lindsay always says summer fashion is all about effortless style. What better way to prove that than in a playsuit? This slinky chambray one-piece by MINKPINK wraps in the front to give the illusion of an adorable mini-dress. The girly silhouette has built in shorts for all those impulse cartwheels on the beach on a summer night.

When thinking about nautical wear, navy and white come to mind but we can not forget about red!  Chicago baby Bitch Chelsea loves a flowy frock that flawlessly transitions from a day of brunch and shopping at local boutiques along the coast to dinner with her “nauty” crew and Anthropologie’s Farida Mock Neck Jumpsuit is perfect. A flowy dress always looks good in the breeze when setting off for a sunset sail.

A good wide-leg pant is always on trend. Alexis is loving this pair of Banana Republic striped navy blue wide leg cropped pants, with front pleats and a sash belt. Paired with a pair of lace-up shoes, these pants are perfect for a day-to-night outfit. Speaking of stripes, NYC editor Giselle has been stalking the swimwear brand Solid & Striped for about a year now and is loving The Anne-Marie, a blue-and-white striped one-piece. One-pieces are still trending and are pretty helpful for flattening, or at least covering up, a lobster roll–filled food baby on the beach. Plus, just pop on a pair of jean shorts, and you’ll be ready to hit the town. Meanwhile we are all in love with Erika’s ASOS striped romper. The perfect outfit for a date night on the cove or dinner on the coast, we love how the stripes add a pop to any outfit, day or night.

Looking for a cute go-to day outfit? This two-piece set is everything. You need it. D.C Baby Bitch Tess needs it. Everyone needs it. It’s nautical and preppy without being over the top. The cute ties make it whimsical and flirty–perfect for barbecues, pool parties, or a yacht–hey, you never know.

D.C Social Bitch Annie slips on these cheeky embroidered Soludos espadrilles for quick errands to the store to celebrate Shark Week all summer long. Meanwhile, Giselle can’t spot something glittery and not give it a double-take. When she came across these sparkly blue cross-strap sandals from & Other Stories, her aversion for the current mule trend flew out the window, and she was hooked. She’d love to pair them with her favorite boyfriend-style Levi’s 501s and a white linen shirt for a casual-cool daytime look.

To no surprise, the Bitches go to libation this season is rosé and Chelsea has found the graphic tee to prove it! Tucking this “La Vie en Rosé” tee into a white maxi skirt, like this one from ASTR, is perfect paired with a pair of white Stan Smith sneakers for a casual day about town. We like adding the Alex and Ani Rose Quartz necklace to this look, too. The girl boss in us swoons as rose quartz is said to carry an abundance of feminine energy including love, compassion, and peace. It is a great accessory for any outfit, as this necklace can be adjusted to wear as a choker, long necklace or anything in between!

Self-declared sunglasses addict, Lindsay is loving Illesteva right now. Their endless selection of mirrored and colored lenses will spice up any outfit. The Dorchester Ace in cream marble puts an unexpected spin on a traditional aviator leaving her feeling just enough nerdy and just enough nautical.

Who doesn’t love a good pom pom? Tess and Erika suggest adding some preppy poms to your nautical ensemble with this adorable straw tote. We love the unique shape and statement poms. Perfect for a weekend in Nantucket or the Hamptons.

Can’t getaway this summer? Pick up a scent that reminds you of the Italian Riviera for everyday. Annie loves the Tom Ford Neroli Portofino for a vibrant, sparkling perfume that transports you to the sparkling blue water, light breezes, and lush foliage of Italy’s coastal towns.

It’s the third month of the summer, so we’ve all been spending a ton of time in the sun. Our NYC editors are being proactive with a few awesome products. Giselle is looking to Korres’s After Sun Greek Yogurt Cooling Gel for Face and Body as a saving grace for her upcoming beach trip to Martha’s Vineyard. An ideal after-sun treatment, this gel hydrates, reduces redness, and prolongs a suntan. Pro tip: Keep it in the fridge. For the ultimate hair care, Lindsay swears by Bare Republic’s UV Protecting Dry Shampoo in the summertime. Whether spending the day out on the water or going for a run, this refresher absorbs excess oils and leaves her locks revitalized and voluminous.

In attempts to keep her skin as youthful as her title, Chicago Baby Bitch Chelsea lives by Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. The concoction of natural oils is extremely helpful in repairing and replenishing skin after hours spent in the summer (or winter) sun. This serum is her salvation and she wouldn’t dare go a day without applying. Alexis is always on the hunt for great natural and organic skincare products and has absolutely fallen in love with the new Pura Organics line face and body scrub. Boss babe owned and made with 100 percent natural formulas, this line is still as luxurious as they come, without the guilt of non-organic ingredients.

For that perfect pop of rouge before heading out the house, this color enhancing lip balm is magical. It simply enhances the natural color of your pout so you can be kissable all day without the hassle of lipstick. You can use it everyday, for a casual date night or beach day when you want a little color on your lips.
