Craft cocktails have always intimidated me. I’m much more inclined to crack open a beer or pop a bottle of bubbly than mix a cocktail for myself at home. Who has the time? I had this preconceived notion that in order to create delicious, homemade cocktails, you must have all of the elixirs, potions, and patience at your disposal, none of which can be found in my apartment as it currently stands.
After spending a fun Wednesday night at Via Umbria learning how to create simple cocktails, I’m now singing a different tune. I realized that classic cocktails like the French 75 and the French Kiss (recipe below) are really no more complex than combining the right proportions of four or five great ingredients. The finished product not only makes you look and feel like a bartender, but is easy enough to pair with a weeknight meal.
It’s the week of love and whether you’re single, hitched, or hopeful, there’s no better excuse to swing by your local liquor store and pick up a few of these ingredients for a fun, post-work cocktail. We’re planning on having a low key night this Valentine’s Day and will be whipping up the French Kiss, a sweet spin on the classic Aperol spritz, from the comfort of our home. However you plan to treat yourself, make it special—you deserve it!
