After Alexis brunched at Lovely: A Bake Shop this past year, I looked at the photos of the beautiful food and read the review with envy. I knew I had to dine there at some point. Although Alexis enjoyed breakfast on her visit, I was confident that the bake shop’s array of desserts and pastries that would make it worth a visit. After all, Lovely is consistently ranked as one of the best bake shops in the city. Lo and behold, Lovely hosted a seasonal treat tasting and when I received an invite, my wish came true!
I made my way from Lincoln Park to Wicker Park, planning to indulge in every treat on the table at Lovely. And while I did plenty of treat tasting, I was met with more than just chocolate-covered coconut macaroons and pumpkin pie. The owners of Lovely, Bob and Gina, were there greeting all the invitees and I was blown away by the two of them. I had the chance to chat with the two baking extraordinaires and I learned about their journey that lead them to baking, to each other, and to expanding their brand by opening Bakin’ and Eggs 2009 in Lakeview and Lovely, too in 2012 in Edgewater.
Beyond their lovely story, the cupcakes, pies, cakes, and tartlets were absolutely to-die-for! I was especially fond of the pumpkin pie but, honestly, there wasn’t really anything I wasn’t fond of.
Needless to say, Bob and Gina are in the midst of building their pastry empire and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes them. And of course, they can count on the Bitches to act as taste-testers whenever they need us!
