So sorry, Hirshhorn. I think I might have a new favorite museum after hours party.
Last Thursday was only the second year the Art Museum of the Americas hosted its Art After Dark event, but it seemed to me like they are old pros at it. It was the perfect end-of-summer night.
More than 1,000 people joined the party in the museum’s pebbled courtyard, which surrounds a reflecting pool. Videos and strange stills were being projected onto the wall of the adjacent building. You could just see the top of the Washington Monument above the trees of the courtyard.
The music from Matthew Hemerlein, Screen Vinyl Image, and (once inside the museum) DJ Smudge was fantastic. The crowd was gorgeous and well dressed. The best part: All proceeds benefited the Friends of the Art Museum of the Americas.
Plus, the event was a great deal: a $25 ticket got you beer and wine, plus a look at the museum’s permanent collections and other works from Kristina Bilonick, Carlos Florez, Billy Frieble, Philip Hodges, Melissa Krodman, Carolina Mayorga, and Wilmer Wilson.
I will definitely be going to this party again.
