I absolutely love meeting other Chicago bloggers—it’s one of the best parts of being a Bitch.
Last November, the ladies of FitCity Blonde joined me for brunch at Publican Quality Meats. We stayed in touch, and Jeannie then invited me to a Cross Town Fitness event. I nearly died during the workout, but it was a great way to catch up.
After the grueling workout, we both felt that brunch was not only deserved, but necessary. Close to the Lakeview Cross Town Fitness location is a popular brunch spot, Hutch. Hutch is a local favorite, and serves brunch every day, making it a week day (and weekend) spot to get your eggs Benny fix.
As Jeannie and I made our way to the hostess stand, I couldn’t help but notice the colorful chalkboard wall, huge dining area, abundance of natural light, and the overwhelming amount of people. On a Saturday at 12:30 p.m., this place was packed, and we were met with a 25-minute wait. Yikes.
Jeannie and I accepted our fate and put our name on the list. As we were waiting, we noticed high-top tables that were vacant near the bar. We found out we could order the full menu from the bar, so we snagged a table to skip the 25-minute wait.
After a strenuous workout like the one we had just been through, it’s advised that you steer clear of alcohol and salt—we didn’t follow that suggestion. Libations were necessary, and we both chose Bloody Marys.
Jeannie chose the Starsky Bloody, which has garlic-infused vodka, smoked jalapeño, house-made BBQ bitters, and a bacon sea-salt rim. Not only did it look incredible but it was delicious and spicy. The garnish with the deep-fried pickle didn’t hurt either!
I went with the Veggie Mary. It sounded refreshing with its cucumber vodka, tomatillos, yellow tomato, cucumber, green apple, and celery salt rim. I must admit I was surprised by its green color, but its presentation was beautiful, and it was delicious and potent—just what I needed.
While sipping our delicious drinks, we began to explore our entree options. With so many delicious choices, it was hard to decide: sweet or savory. Thankfully, Jeannie and I were on the same page and wanted a bit of both.
We let our helpful waiter know that we wanted to split a sweet dish, and he recommended the croissant French toast. Yum! The kitchen prepared two plates for us, and we were floored by the taste. The strawberries were perfectly ripe and sweet and went well with the mascarpone cheese on top. We both loved this dish, and by the end of the meal, it was our hands-down favorite.
Once the two of us split a sweet dish, it was time to move on to savory. Jeannie had been eyeing the Veggie Eggs Benedict since we sat down, and when it arrived, she wasn’t disappointed.
The Benedict was loaded with mushrooms and spinach, all atop a perfectly toasted English muffin. The poached eggs were droolworthy and made for a picture-perfect eggs Benny. On the side were cheesey potatoes, which were delicious, but the Benny was the show stopper.
It had been a while since I had smoked salmon, and when I saw the Lox and Bagel board, I was on board (pun intended). The platter arrived with cream cheese, chopped hard boiled eggs, capers, tomato, and red onion.
My sweet tooth was satisfied by the croissant French toast and, while this was a very basic entree, I was left satisfied and guiltless. It was perfect after that Cross Town Fitness class!
Hutch is a great place to stop for brunch any day of the week. It’s a casual spot, with amazing food, and although there was a wait, being able to take the high top table near the bar made our experience better.
The Bitches say: A. Hutch is a casual brunch spot in Lakeview that has everything from strong libations to classic dishes and everything in between.
