I’m clearly on a Mexican kick this month. And also a brunch kick to fill all this idle winter time in the city. Last weekend, with a blistering cold Sunday ahead, we warmed up at Cosme with a killer meal. Cosme has been high on my brunch list for a while, ever since I read that the menu was entirely gluten free.
To start, we dived right in with three mushroom quesadillas, which were huge portions filled with queso cheese and served with a green salsa. This was yummy but straightforward – it is, after all, tortillas and cheese.
We also ordered coffees for the table, which they served with steamed milk and petite cookies, a lovely personal touch.
Next up was the huevos rancheros served with refried black beans, mushrooms, and queso fresco. This was a really special dish, and much more authentic than anything I’ve had in the past.
I also usually find huevos rancheros to be too hearty for me, and this was much lighter than the Tex Mex version I’m used to, with a salsa-like consistency.
Our favorite of the group was the red chilaquiles with egg and creme fraiche – the portion was packed with flavor and had the perfect amount of spice. I’ve never had a dish like this before and find myself day dreaming about it a week later. This was a total standout.
Cosme’s brunch scene was bustling, and without reservations we had to dine at the high top tables, so I’d recommend booking in advance. This would be a really fun spot with friends if you were in a margarita kind of a mood.
The Bitches say: Five flutes. This fancy Mexican brunch is the perfect place to drown your winter sorrows, in both margaritas and queso. Every dish is special and extremely satisfying.
Cosme serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
