Chikalicious Dessert Club Brunch (The Doughssant)

You may remember a former post about my first meeting with the Cronut. After months of reading about the Cronut craze all over the world, I was desperate to try it for myself. The experience was as amazing as I’d hoped, but left me wondering what the hybrid pastry landscape was like in other New York bakeries. I decided it wasn’t fair to label Dominique Ansel’s bakery as the best croissant-doughnut I’ve had without trying out the competition flourishing around me, and immediately focused my attention on finding the next Cronut imposter to sample.

Enter: ChikaLicious Dessert Club’s Doughssant


I felt some loyalty to the Cronut; it was, after all, my first. Nobody likes a copycat and I felt much less triumphant carrying the “almost Cronut” Doughssant through the office. That being said, I was secretly swayed when I discovered I had the choice of nine flavors, where the Cronut only offers one flavor per month. I went with the Creme Brulee, but strategically shared flavors like Pumpkin Pie and Original with a few co-workers.

Overall, I had a nearly identical experience to the Cronut. Visually, they look almost the same. Tastefully, I had a very difficult time differentiating between the two. The major standout to me was that the Doughssant tasted fresher than the Cronut, which made me suspicious about how long our massive Cronut order had been sitting in the bakery before it was delivered. The texture was epic; crunchy on the outside but surprisingly moist and soft on the inside. I thought the cream was maybe even a step above the Cronut.


The deal breaker is that the Doughssant is hassle free. No lines, no early commitments, no wasted time. I had a few visitors from suburbia the following weekend who also happened to be dessert lovers, and I knew I could count on ChikaLicious to deliver a mind-blowing treat without the inconvenience. To me, it’s a no brainer. I like the bragging rights that come with the hyped up Cronut, but the reality is that this option does a darn good, if not better, job.

The Bitches say: A. Let’s be honest, no one wants to admit to standing in a line for three hours for a donut, even one that’s half a croissant. A free Chanel bag, sure. A few thousand calories, wrapped up in pastry? Pass. Chikalicious’ Doughssant offers a better alternative to everything (but the calories), and is my go-to brunch dessert going forward.
