When writing the review for The Sosta, I was just about baffled that we had not yet tapped into by CHLOE.’s fast-casual vegan brunch (the two are sister restaurants). This is a go-to dinner for my friends and me after work because it’s always quick and delicious. I’d been meaning to stop in to have a go at their brunch for so long, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Before opening The Sosta in Nolita, by CHLOE. was Samantha Wasser’s ultimate pride and joy. Seeing the brand through its inception and growth as co-founder and creative director, Wasser has put her heart and soul into the preservation of the brand even with rocky press earlier this year with the exit of by CHLOE.’s co-founder and namesake.
“At by CHLOE., our goal is simple —to redefine what it means to eat well,” says the restaurant’s website. By CHLOE. may be vegan, but this restaurant is serving plant-based twists on our favorite fast-food guilty pleasures.
By CHLOE. has expanded from just one West Village flagship to multiple locations around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Boston. The Bitches were invited in for a treat at the relatively new SoHo location, just a quick walk from my apartment.
We were immediately greeted by Richard and Frank from the team who directed us to Samantha’s favorite seat in the house and treated us like queens (not Bitches). Taking recommendations from the restaurant on our brunch selections has become my signature move, so we proceeded with a perfect blend of sweet and savory menu items.
Up first, my friend went for her self-proclaimed hangover cure, fresh coconut water—this time served in an incredibly adorable branded coconut, I might add. I opted for a simple iced coffee. We decided to dig into the savory dishes before indulging in the sweet.
We split everything because we simply couldn’t decide on who would taste what. The breakfast burrito, aka the Sunrise, was tough to cut in half and ultimately ended up spilling out onto the tray. The whole wheat tortilla came stuffed with scrambled tofu, spicy seitan chorizo, black bean salsa, avocado, and crema. Unfortunately, all the flavors blended together blandly, and missing was the zing of a freshly salted egg. That’ll be my only complaint of the place, as the sour cream–and-paprika topped hash brown was zesty as all get out, and the sweet treats left my taste buds satisfied for days.
Açai bowls are my favorite food group, and by CHLOE. serves their gigantic purple-based smoothie bowl with granola, banana, apple, blueberries, goji berries, chia seeds, coconut, and raw almond butter. Some people may think this is way too many toppings, but all of the textures rise to the forefront for a crunchy, juicy, delicious combination. Most açai bowls in New York are severely lacking in texture and toppings, so let’s just say I’d strongly recommend this version.
To finish things off? By CHLOE.’s daily pancake. Since it is fall and all, this version was topped with maple butter and yummy apple compote. You can go with or without their signature coconut whipped cream, so we obviously went with. I’m not a huge pancake fan, but by CHLOE.’s vegan version was so great I couldn’t put down my fork.
The Bitches say: Five Champagne Flutes. By CHLOE. has become a staple for any city-dwelling millennial. Dishing out fast-casual vegan fare is their specialty. Brunch is no outcast and is served with just as much thought and creativity as their spot-on branding.
