Happy Wednesday, and sorry for the late edition of our events roundup this week. We were very busy celebrating Memorial Day until the very last second of Monday evening, and Tuesday was just a wash. It happens. But we’re back at it today and more ready than ever to enjoy the good weather and good times to come this week. Specifically, that means drinks, donuts, festival foods, and more. Ready for this week’s agenda? You know what to do.
Short weeks have a particularly strange way of feeling longer than you’d expect, a situation that, for many of us, calls for a drink. If you’re feeling extra spirited tonight, head to Bar Moga for Coco’s Spirits, a weekly educational Japanese spirit series hosted by Kayoko “Coco” Seo, a trained jazz musician and Japanese beverage expert who has previous experience at Angel Share, the famed East Village speakeasy. This month Coco is showcasing Toki Suntory Whisky and offering tastes for just $8 a glass. Drink option number two is the Toki Highball (whisky and water) on draft. Coco will be on hand from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for your pressing questions. Non-whisky drinkers can imbibe from the rest of the drink menu, which features primarily female winemakers. 128 W Houston St, New York, NY
You can never know too much about wine and cheese, are far as we’re concerned. So if you’ve got a hunger for more knowledge, indulge your brain and your taste buds tonight at Murray’s Cheese Shop for Drink Local: An Evening of Wine, Cheese, and More With Wölffer Estate ($90). Learn all about creating the perfect wine-and-cheese pairing from Roman Roth, head winemaker at Wölffer, as well as a Murray’s cheese expert. What goes best with a dry white wine? Brie? Goat cheese? Who knows! The possibilities are endless, but please report back with the best tidbits of knowledge, if you’re so inclined. 254 Bleecker St, New York, NY
You made it to the end of the week, so you definitely deserve a donut—or five. It’s National Donut Day! Feel free to go wild. The requisite donut staples—Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts—are having their free-donut specials, and so is Burger King randomly, but if you’re into more elevated pastries, might we suggest the above vegan pistachio orange donuts from Vandal? Talk about a delicious indulgence.
Headed to Governors Ball for day two of the festival? Now in its eighth year, Gov Ball has its food lineup down pat, and the food and drink lineup is filled to bursting with some of our favorite places around the city. Think Roberta’s pizza, Blue Stone Lane, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Do, Sweet Chick, Matchabar, and more. You’ll need to stay hydrated, so take in the free water stations around the concert grounds, but when you’re ready for something stronger, the Miller Lite beer garden will have Blue Moon, Summer Shandy, Crispin rosé cider, and more. Keep an eye out for craft brews from Ommegang Brewery, Lagunitas, and Bell’s Brewer as well as summer cocktails like Gov Ball punch by Bacardi and our favorite summer sip, the Aperol Spritz. Drink responsibly, as always, but eat to your heart’s content.
Not heading back to Gov Ball for day three? Head to brunch instead. Lately we’re loving The Wren for unique brunch cocktails, Umami Burger for mouthwatering burgers, and Harvey at the Williamsburg Hotel for good food and its Instagrammable interior.
