There’s nothing better than summer in Washington: brunch outdoors, afternoons spent by the Penthouse Pool, rose on patios. I hope your weekend left you suntanned and refreshed. Here’s to the last week of July. PS. Don’t miss the giveaway!

Monday

Fun fact: Today is National Peruvian Day. Las Canteras, a Peruvian spot in downtown Washington, is celebrating with a special chef’s dinner this evening. The meal will feature fresh ceviche, prime beef lomo saltado, and a choice of appetizers and desserts for a prix fixe of $39.50 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. Tuesday

We’re giving away two tickets to the second Chefs Behind Bars, where six of the area’s best chefs will compete to create a signature cocktail. The chefs time around are Bart Vandaele of B Too, Douglas Alexander of Art & soul, Frank Paris of Sona Creamery, Frederick de Pue of Table and Menu MBK, George Pagonis of Kapnos, and Marjorie Meek-Bradley of Ripple and Roofer’s Union.  A panel of judges vote on the winner at Union Market on Tuesday. Wednesday

Take a break midweek with a massage or facial at Aura Spa in Vida Fitness. This summer, Aura Spa is offering 15 percent off massages or facials on weekdays. There are locations at the Renaissance Hotel, U Street, Verizon Center, Metropole and City Visa. Both Becca and I swear by the facial esthetician at the Metropole location.

Thursday

Our favorite Jewish deli, DGS, is having an evening event, Delicatessen After Dark.  Plus, Charlottesville brewery 3 Stars is setting up shop and the restaurant’s chef, Brian Robinson, is cooking up 12-hour-smoked brisket, beer-can chicken, grilled corn with pastrami butter, schmaltz braised greens and more. Friday

August is National Coffee Month and Peruvian restaurant, Mio, is celebrating with four specials that celebrate everyone’s favorite source of caffeine. There’s a coffee-rubbed rack of lamb with five chilis, a coffee citrus spiced cured salmon and a coffee flan, with fresh cream and berries. Last but not least, a Café Colada, which is a variation of the classic Piña Colada, the Café Colada is coconut cream, fresh crushed pineapple, Puerto Rican white rum, and Mio’s coffee espresso. Saturday

Enjoy Saturday evening cocktails at one of our favorite spots, Bar Barcelona. There are a few new cocktails on the menu, including two enticing options: the Bee’s Wings, a Barcelona version of the Prohibition-era cocktail with a blend of Bar Hill Gin, Yellow Chartreuse, agave nectar, orange blossom water, lemon juice and pasteurized egg white; and the Whiskey Root, made with Byrrh Quinquina, fresh ginger, basil leaves, lemon juice, and Buffalo Trace Bourbon. Bar Barcelona, 14th St. N.W. There’s also a new Cirque du Soleil show at the National Harbor. Amaluna is Cirque du Soleil’s 33rd production and the artistic, acrobatic, unique display pays tribute to women. Find more information online.

Sunday

  2. My favorite summer drink has been a cocktail from The Tabbard Inn. It is called the “French Seventy-Five”. It is made with Hayman’s Old Tom Gin, Cane Syrup, Lemon Juice, Sparkling Wine, and Grapefruit Bitters. It is served chilled. Delish! (PS: Pick me for the Chefs Behind Bars tickets, please!)
