This Week in D.C.: August 11-17

Cori Sue is in Paris, and while I’m positively drooling over her gastronomic Instagram porn, I’m holding down the Bitches fort this week.

It’s officially the dog days of summer—mid August, ya’ll—so we’ve decided to host a summer-closing shindig to round it out in style. You’re invited, of course! Enter: Bubbles, Barbecue & Bluegrass, a patio party at The Heights on August. 27.

RSVP now, as this event will fill up fast and we have a limited capacity.

Protein Bar’s D.C. locations are serving up their 20-ounce blended shakes for half the price on weekdays through the end of this month. As I’m looking ahead to a fall of fitness (gotta work off the debaucherous Summer of Love, after all), this is music to my ears. The high-protein shakes are custom made to order and they have no added syrups, concentrates or juices. My favorite? The Red Line made with vanilla protein, choice of milk, strawberries and banana. Three locations: 1011 19th Street NW, 925 17th Street NW, 398 7th Street NW.

It’s restaurant week, and while I’m not a huge fan of the annual event (small entrees for $35? meh), I most definitely will be enjoying the specials at Lavagna in Barracks Row. Plus, Tuesday night is half-priced wine night. This week, they have tons of other restaurant week specials, and the entire menu is available on the special (at full size, wheo!). Head there for some weeknight Minestrone Soup Rigatoni, Provolone Salad, Ravioli Fritto, or the Shenandoah Short Rib. 539 8th Street SE.

One of my favorite things about summer is all the outdoor movie screenings. It’s Screen on the Green’s last showing on Monday, but if you missed that, head to the NoMa Summer Screen Wednesday evening. They’ll be showing The Sandlot from the field at Second and L Streets NE. There will also be music, giveaways, and food trucks. Coolers, children and friendly (leashed) dogs are welcome.

I’ll be at Polo on the Mall Thursday evening. First, there’s a polo match from 6 to 7 p.m. (weather permitting). Then, the apres-polo sparkling wine tasting and cocktail reception is sure to be an annual end-of-summer must-attend fete. Co-hosted by Bull+Moose, The St Regis Hotel DC, Greenhill Winery and Vineyards, Great Meadow Polo Club, and 10 Goal Strategy. The event is currently sold out, but click here to get on the wait list. 1964 Independence Avenue SW.

With summer wrapping up, you need to get in more baseball games while you can! Friday night is the perfect opportunity, as a portion of ticket sales for the Nats vs. Pirates game will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Foundation. Just order tickets here, per usual, but make sure you enter the code “WISH” in the coupon code box at check-out. After the game, head to Cantina Marina. The river-side restaurant is donating 20 percent of food and beverage sales (all guests, all day) to the Make-A-Wish organization, as well.

Saturday night, check out a show at The Hamilton. There’s a fantastic New Orleans band playing called Flow Tribe, beginning at 9 p.m. They create “backbone cracking music,” a soul-shaking mixture of styles and sounds. These are six seasoned performers who have shared the stage with the likes of Trombone Shorty, Juvenile, and BIll Summers, just to name a few. Doors open at 7 p.m. Get tickets here.

Brunch, of course. Lately we’ve loved The Ritz-Carlton Yoga Brunch, Point Chaud Cafe & Crepes, and Toro Toro. Plus, Piola is now offering bottomless sangria at their brunch!
