Here’s to kicking off December with fashion and food events—and plenty of holiday sparkle.
It’s officially the holidays, as the Eighth Annual Downtown Holiday Market returns for 24 delightful days on the F Street sidewalk in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery between 7th & 9th Streets N.W. Bringing a unique and festive shopping “village” to the heart of Downtown D.C., the noon to 8 p.m. market features more than 180 regional artisans, crafters and boutique businesses of ethnically produced goods. There’s also lovely seasonal entertainment, plus great snacks and festive treats.
Afterwards, grab dinner at the new Matchbox on 14th Street (U Street and Logan Circle residents are positively thrilled that they do take-out, too!). We checked it out last week, and the restaurant chain’s new flag ship is not only rather enormous, it’s also surprisingly warm and cozy. So snuggle up in a booth and order their famous pizza and delicious apps, like the tuna tartare, pictured here. Make reservations here.
Another sure sign it’s the holidays: On Tuesday evening the U.S. Capitol Building tree will be lit by Speaker of the House John Boehner in a ceremony that’s free and open to the public. Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers, AIA, LEED AP, will serve as master of ceremonies. Called “The People’s Tree”, the U. S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be harvested from the White River National Forest in Colorado. Enjoy the show from the West Lawn of U.S. Capitol, Constitution and Independence Avenues, Washington, D.C.
Before you go nutso on the holiday shopping, do something good for a family affected by cancer (who may not be able to provide gifts for their kids this year). Join We Will Survive Cancer on Tuesday evening for a special Christmas wish drive. The event will be held at One Lounge and feature Brazilian Fashion Store D’Milikah & DC music artist L’illon. A $20 minimum donation at the door is requested. Gift cards are also encouraged as donation gifts for the families. Attendees will enjoy extended happy hour specials and raffles.
High-end Georgetown bridal gown shop Carine’s Bridal Atelier is cleaning out their closets and holding their semi-annual sample sale. During this highly-anticipated sales event, style-seeking customers can score couture designs from industry icons like Monique Lhuillier, Marchesa, Carolina Herrera, Rivini and more all at highly discounted prices. These stunning gowns will be sold “as-is” and first-come, first serve. High attendance is expected so the shop recommends parties of four or less. 5 to 8 p.m. 1726 Wisconsin Ave N.W., 2nd Floor.
Our friend and fave fashion blogger Meg Biram is hosting a holiday event at the new Intermix in Georgetown. But this isn’t just any holiday event with drinks & shopping (although there will be both). She will be collecting gently used handbags and jewelry to donate to Suited For Change, an organization that enables low-income women to increase their employment and job retention potential. We’ll be going through our bags and jewelry this week to donate. See you there from 6 to 8 p.m.
Urban Chic is geared up for the holidays, starting with their trunk show for popular DC designer Rochelle Behrens’ line, The Shirt, on Thursday at both store locations. Urban Chic customers will enjoy special discounts all month long, too. Both stores will offer shopper wish lists that, when brought to the store and redeemed by a gifter, will receive 20 percent off. The stores will also be doing “12 Days of Discounts” starting Wednesday with a different surprise offer each day, announced each morning via Facebook. Mailing list customers will also enjoy access to private events and promotions throughout the month.
After your shopping is done, head to the first annual Glover Park Crush Party at Town Hall, hosted by Hin.ge, Cori Sue, and a gaggle of gals. We think everyone should have somebody to keep them warm (and maybe drink some spiked nogs and hot chocs with) during this holiday season, and this is the party to find that someone. The event concept is simple: Invite your friends, or email [email protected], and tell them who you’d like to secretly invite and they’ll be anonymously invited, too. Complimentary prosecco from 7-9 p.m. Drink specials all night long: $3 beers, $4 wines, $5 rail cocktails and $5 prosecco (after 9).
Cori Sue is one of Guest of a Guest’s Hot 100, and we’ll be celebrating this honor at their invite-only party Friday night. Didn’t make the guest list? Join award-winning restaurateur Ashok Bajaj at 701 for a performance from the band “Prelude.” This talented group, which has played at the White House, will perform brilliantly composed holiday music spanning a wide variety of genres. Guests at 701 can anticipate enjoying jazz, swing, funk, rock and pop music along with the young and talented “Shivani” on vocals. Make reservations here.
OUTFITTED is hosting its first Washington D.C. popup shop on Saturday. We’re so excited for this, as there will be pieces from the women’s footwear line Penelope and Coco, jewelry brand Luv AJ, downtown Los Angeles favorite Virgo Downtown, along with a selection from MinkPink and the cold weather accessories brand Plush. OUTFITTED DC will be held at OZIO Restaurant and Lounge (1813 M Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20036) from 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Complimentary mimosas and refreshments by Sprinkles Cupcakes will be served throughout the day. Guests can RSVP and direct any questions to [email protected]
That night, make sure you’ve got your tickets to the 21st Annual Capital Club Santa Soiree. Wear your yuletide black and to the City Club Tavern. Enjoy live music from DC’s own The Winn Brothers Band. 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Get tickets here.
Want a bit of the holidays with your Sunday brunch? Santa Claus is flying into town early again this season, parking his reindeer and sled atop the world-famous Kennedy Center, as Roof Terrace Restaurant prepares for its 16th Annual Holiday Brunches with Santa. A Washington D.C. area tradition for years, the holiday brunch buffet allows patrons to enter Roof Terrace’s expansive kitchen to choose from an array of items, including seasonal gourmet salads, freshly shucked oysters, house-baked pastries, French toast and made-to-order omelets. The kids table will feature favorites such as macaroni and cheese, chicken fingers and fries while each adult will receive a complimentary glass of mimosa or sparkling wine. Seatings begin at 10:00am. $39.95 for adults and $20.00 for children ages 4-11.
