The Lust List: Puffer Vests

Despite that funky 70-degree “heat wave” we just had in the Northeast, I can officially report from Chicago that winter is coming. When one is snuggled under a cashmere blanket and sipping a hot cider (preferably spiked), winter can actually be quite enjoyable. Eventually we city-dwellers will need to venture outdoors and will pile on every layer possible. One of our favorite go-to winter layering pieces is a versatile puffer vest.

Not every vest is created equal. Gigantic marshmallow numbers prioritize function over fashion, but now other styles are available in a variety of cuts, colors, and price points. I love a great peplum vest, as pictured below, that defines some shape in your figure and also styles in bold, seasonally appropriate patterns such as stripes, houndstooth, and plaid.

Speaking of marshmallows, you can still add a bit of sass to your style even when donning bulky layers. A cold weather mini and thick thigh highs or tights keep this look fresh and feminine. Black skinnies or jewel toned cords and heeled booties can help bring your puffer vest from day to night, especially when paired with a vampy lip.

We’ve also perused between vests of different weights from fluffy down options to more lightweight quilted varieties. Classic retailer J. Crew offers quilted down vests in a rainbow of colors that never go out of style. Each season’s latest hue is always on the top of my Christmas list. Old Navy makes a similar vest at a fraction of the price–a mere $35, or the cost of a boozy brunch in New York City.
