Like mother, like daughter, they always say. While I look nothing like my mother, I do share her penchant for preppy, classic, and put-together style. Just reference my addictions to navy-and-white stripes and polka dots.
Now, my mother loves black watch plaid. In the 80s, I remember her wearing a Black Watch plaid mini skirt with a matching headband. In the 90s, I remember us both wearing Black Watch plaid mini skirts and matching headbands. Those were the days.
It is certainly my favorite plaid, as it’s gorgeous and just so perfect for winter. Given our history, it was no surprise when I opened a package from Nordstrom to discover a new winter coat—in black watch plaid as a gift from my mother. Despite my full arrival into adulthood, my mother remains concerned for my warmth and well being.
I could think of oodles of ways to style this beautiful Michael Kors plaid mens coat. Most obviously as a way to add some interest to an all-black winter ensemble. Or, wear the coat over a black or grey slouchy sweater dress, paired with black tights and booties. The coat has a gorgeous leather trim—which means it looks pulled together with my favorite pair of leather leggings and a black floppy hat.
Menswear coats are incredibly popular this season, providing a much-needed departure from trench, pea and classic wool overcoats. I love the large, open collar and the boxy, over-sized style. It reminds me of chic street style you’d see in New York or Paris.
For this work-to-cocktails look, I went a little edgy, with dark tones to match the cold temps. As I’m obsessed with the shade of burgundy, I purchased a pair of pointy-toed burgundy suede pumps to take my look up a notch. I’m surprised by just how much they go with: black, grey, navy, hunter green, denim, white—you name it. These burgundy puppies are comfortable and affordable—and don’t make my big feet look too big.
