It admittedly took me a long time to warm to the overalls trend. As in, like two years. I pride myself on being a relatively early adopter to quirkier fashion trends –enter my fake septum ring and elephant pants–but there was something about overalls that I couldn’t really get behind, until recently.
I had put overalls in the same category of sixth grade wardrobe staples that I never thought would come back around, like cargos, camo print anything, and plastic henna chokers, but the extremely cyclical nature of fashion surprises me every time.
I finally came to terms with overalls once I started seeing more fitted versions of the trend that were elongating and slimming on bottom. Some of my favorite street style bloggers have rocked black leather overalls and bell-bottomed styles, something that I can get behind.
I balanced out this pair of baggy, distressed overall shorts with a tight, patterned body suit; I still can’t get enough of punchy palm front prints in the summertime. Looser fitting “boyfriend” style overalls can also shift from frumpy to sassy with a crop top or an off-the-shoulder top underneath to show just the right amount of skin.
Paired with a few summer brights like neon slides, statement sunnies, and a textured clutch, a simple pair of overalls is anything but boring. I scored this pair of overalls at my favorite vintage store in New York City, The Vintage Twin, at their JEANius bar where an expert immediately sizes you up and picks out vintage denim that fits you like a charm. The gals at the Vintage Twin distressed the overalls to my liking, frayed the hems, and even offered to add patches.
