Oh spring. Fresh flowers, warm weather, sundresses, sandals, and… horse races. We’re very excited for a day of lady-like debauchery this Saturday at the Virginia Gold Cup. In case you’ve never been, or are having trouble deciding on an outfit, here is our rundown of the must-have’s for the day. More ideas will follow today and tomorrow with more “Lust List” posts. Ladies, the essentials:
1.) A brightly colored sundress. Madras, floral, damask, stripes, polka dot, eyelet, anything goes– the brighter the better. One of the only times in your D.C. life that Lily Pulitzer is totally appropriate. J.Crew, Milly, and Tibi are also good girly brands. You may want to avoid white eyelet (I love white dresses) due to spillage issues.

2.) Comfy, cute sandals– Espadrilles or flats. You may be tempted to wear a new pair (as I am)- don’t. You’ll be romping about in a field, intoxicated, surrounded by other intoxicated individuals. Ideally, I envision espadrilles with big bows or flowers.

3.) A wide-brimed Derby-style hat. Straw hats in natural or white will go with almost all dresses year after year. There are other types of hats, but, it’s a horse race. Why bother? If you’re hunting in the D.C. area, try Propper Topper, the Hattery, or Filene’s Basement. Becca e-mailed her office ladies– they searched their hat boxes– and the next day she had not one, but two, gorgeous Derby hats.

4.) A clutch or wrislet (to prevent loss or damage) — either brightly colored or straw (to pair with the espadrilles!)
Wicker Clutch, $46, Loris Shoes
5.) Lots of fun jewelry– think bracelets with chandelier earrings, or a statement necklace– but not all three.
6.) Sunglasses (be sure to try them out with your hat to make sure it doesn’t look funny!)
Off to the races!
