The Lust List: Fit Bitches

We Bitches love food, fashion, and fitness—the latter primarily because we need to work off all those mimosa and pancakes calories ingested on the weekends. We’d much rather enjoy that second glass of wine and hit the gym in the a.m. than deprive ourselves of pleasure.

I, for one, actually enjoy working out. I know, I know, most people are horrified when they hear that. A Florida girl, I’ve been a gym rat and runner since the tender age of 13. Pilates, yoga, weights, intervals, spin, bootcamp—I love it all. And, our partner VIDA Fitness, has it all.

Meanwhile, Becca is a newer convert to the cult of fitness. She started running when she came to Washington five years ago, and now she supplements her sprints with super-early sculpting with her personal trainer, Christine, at VIDA Metropole.

Now that it’s cold outside, I’ve been heading back indoors to take in a high-intensity VIDA M.I.T. class or tighten my tushie and tone my abs with one of their spectacular Pilates classes. On the off chance I don’t feel like working out, I resolve the problem as I do most of my issues: by going shopping.

Yes, a quick jaunt to my neighborhood Lululemon for a new tank top or a “Shop.Click.Buy.” for a new pair of kicks gets me back in the gym faster than I can run a 5K when you’ve promised me brunch afterward. (And that’s pretty fast.) In the interest of our Bitches who are lookin’ to get fit, get back in the gym, or get motivated in 2014, we’ve decided to dedicate this week’s Lust List to fit fashion.

If you’re a new gym goer, we suggest investing in five items: (1) a pair of black, skinny full-length yoga pants, (2) a workout tank with a built-in-shelf bra, (3) a cute sweatshirt to take you to-and-from the gym, (4) a good, sturdy pair of sneakers, and (5) a stretchy headband to keep your hair back.

For workout wear, our favorite retailers are Lululemon, Athleta, and Nordstrom, which carries a wide array of sneakers and workout attire. Becca has also recently been raiding the downtown City Sports on 19th Street (which also has a Tuesday evening running club).

The building block of any workout ensemble is a solid pair of black, tight leggings—no need to attract unwanted attention with some wild pattern of crazy color. While a boot cut may be more flattering, a skinny leg will ensure you can wear one pair for all activities—yoga, running, weights, spin, and other classes—boot cuts legs can get caught on sneakers or in bike wheels and lead to disaster.

Personally, I swear by the Lululemon Wunder Under yoga pant. Despite the hefty price tag of $92, I maintain they’re worth every penny, as they’re comfortable, stretchy, sag-resistant, and make your bum look phenom. I can wear mine to run 10 miles, work out at Vida, take in a yoga class, or throw on with a sweater for brunch. And I do.

They hold up in the wash. They’re long enough for tall ladies like Becca, and Lululemon offers free hemming for shorties like me. Becca, on the other hand, loves Zella leggings from Nordstrom and the Victorias Secret favorite yoga pant, available in short and tall. If you’re feeling funky, try these Eclipse tie dye leggings at Nordstrom.

For tank tops, Lululemon has dozens of different styles, allowing you to search by activity, support, and bust-size. I personally swear by the Power Y Tank and the Scoop Neck Tank—as they are both flattering and can be worn for all my various fitness activities. However, bustier Bitches should turn to the Push Your Limits Tank, as it offers more support. And, in the interest of decorum, Lululemon’s tank tops have cup inserts to ensure I’m not flashing my headlights when I step into the air-conditioning or out into the cold.

Athleta’s piece-of-mind cami offers flattering ruching, solid support with a Y-back tank, and extended sizes to fit Bitches of all shapes. The breathe tank offers that same ruching and support with more coverage. If you’re looking to be a fashion-forward fit Bitch, we’d opt for this sexy, snazzy number from Hard Tail.

Rather than wear a ratty old sweatshirt or a thick coat, I opt for a cute, form-fitting sweatshirt—either a half-zip of a full zip—to wear over my workout tank. That way, I look cute in transit. And, if someone were to ask you to coffee  or  a smoothie at Vida’s Juice Bar after—you’d feel your outfit was cute enough to say yes.

In terms of footwear, if you’re heading the the gym, you’ll need a pair of trainers. In addition to making sure they’re the proper size, sneaker width is important, as we don’t want any rolled ankles this year. We love Asics and Nike, as both brands have put out stylish, fun sneakers as of late. Those Nike Flyknits are pretty fly.

Running shoes are far more complicated: Most seasoned runners have brands they prefer. If you’re a new runner, we recommend you go to a running store, like Pacers, to get fitted for the best pair of sneakers for your body type, foot, and running style. As for me, I swear by Newton Running Shoes, as they’re light, sturdy and encourage a natural forefoot strike.

As we Bitches love accessorizing, we’ll be rocking a stretchy headband to match our workout tanks. Aside from the cuteness factor, these stretchy cotton bands keep our bangs and layers off our foreheads in yoga and on a run—keeping us looking chic while we sweat. We recommend the flyaway tamer from Lululemon, the three-strand headband from Athleta, or the two-strand headband from Zella at Nordstrom.

Now get out there, Bitches!
