If you’re anything like my family, we receive a fresh pair of pajamas and a warm winter sweater every holiday season. After many years of this sacred tradition, I’ve stockpiled a colorful array of cable knits, cowl necks, and long johns. Each carefully crafted cardigan brings back fond memories as I unpack it for the season. One of the best things about these comfy winter sweaters is that they will only go out of style if you’re rocking a trendy embellishment or the pattern du jour.
Besides the timeless style, we also love the versatility of comfy sweaters. They go with practically everything. Bitch in the City Emily’s chunky, monochromatic Free People sweater looks effortlessly chic paired with a well-fitting pair of black skinnies, a soft scarf, tough Frye moto boots, and a stylish Dagne Dover tote. It’s just the right amount of classic prep and New York City edge.
We also love tossing a shaggy knit over jewel-toned cords, a winter mini skirt, or a lace dress to tone down the formal look. The larger sweater you go up top should balance out with a more fitted bottom so you aren’t lost in the cashmere. Finish with some smoking slippers or riding boots by day and spiffy pumps or booties by night.
My favorite type of comfy sweater has an oversized fit; the bigger, the better. A giant cowl neck adds a bit of drama to this look and negates the need for a scarf, while an iconic crew neck is the perfect blank palette for a stunning statement necklace.
Although I’m typically a fan of bold colors, I’ve been drawn to cozy knits in neutral hues such as gray, camel, black, and winter white this year. The overall look is warm and inviting, rather than the brash nature of a bright tone. The shades blend harmoniously and are ideal for layering together. Everything coordinates so it makes your morning routine a breeze during the dark, cold winter mornings.
Below are our favorite comfy sweaters this season for a variety of budgets.
