The Horny Ram Brunch

Brunch-aholics in New York City may not initially think of Midtown East as a thriving brunch neighborhood—especially the blocks in the low 50s peppered with high-turnover sports bars. The Horny Ram’s four-floor vine-covered facade was my first welcome to this hood as a Bitch Who Brunches.

I had heard great things about this spot (mostly from out-of-towners, which was kind of odd), so when they invited me in to have at a new special dish, I leaped at the offer.

My boyfriend and I strolled over to the restaurant on a quiet, damp weekend morning and were delighted to find an inviting staff and homey atmosphere. The Horny Ram prides itself on serving top-notch cocktails and comfort food in its spacious, multilevel space with a promise of laid-back vibes, great memories, and exceptional food. Did they live up to the claim? And then some.

The Horny Ram offers a bottomless brunch special for just $19 for 90 minutes of unlimited Bloody Marys, mimosas, or bellinis. While a great, and I’m sure delicious, deal, we opted to forego this option solely because I had my eye on the strawberry basil lemonade cocktail.

My cocktail was totally worth it—just sweet enough with the lemon and basil masking the vodka taste. And best of all, it was my favorite color, pink! My boo snagged The Horny Ram Bloody Mary, his go-to these days, and was sure to note that the tomatoey mix tasted beyond fresh, zesty, and perfectly spicy.

We were here to try the donut special, which sounded so good to each of us that we decided to split it as an app. Looking back on it, our waiter must have thought we were insane, because the dish that landed at our table was gigantic. A fluffy mouthwatering Dough glazed donut was sliced in half like a bun and filled with bacon, a fried egg, cheese, and avocado. We never would have thought the sandwich would be as good as it was. It was somehow the perfect combination of sweet and salty, and I only hope my last meal will be half as good. I begged the team to add it to the full-time brunch menu, so keep your fingers crossed.

We were onto entrees, worrying that they may not live up to the appetizer we just devoured. My man chose the pork belly croque madame. Braised pork belly sat between two slices of grilled sourdough that were then topped with melty gruyere and an over easy egg. Immediately upon slicing into the middle of the sandwich, yolk began to ooze right into the bread, creating the perfect texture to complement the meaty filling. Served with a side of wedge-cut fries, this croque madame was hearty and delicious.

I decided to order the smoked salmon Eggs Benedict, expecting the dish to be simple, classic, and yummy. Yes, it checked those three boxes, but I was dumbfounded by the smoked salmon. This was some of the best lox I’ve ever had, which is saying a lot because I put it on pretty much everything. Moist and flavorful, the fish created a textural oasis between the poached egg, hollandaise, and toasted English muffin. My beau couldn’t get enough of my home fries and gobbled them up before I could stop him.
