The Fashion Menu: October

It’s officially October and finally starting to feel like fall in the Northeast. Our Jack Rogers are now buried in the back of our closets and replaced by booties, knee-high riding boots, and spunky oxfords.

And though we may not be heading back to school, we’re still lusting for classic schoolboy plaid prints, worn anywhere from boxy outer coats, over-sized scarves, or pleated skirts.

This October, we’re keeping the focus on the bold pattern by neutralizing the remainder of the look with black, gray, brown, and nude hues. We also love a pop of jewel tones, like hunter green, navy, fuchsia, and rich marigold, particularly on a polished handbag or a pretty pair of pumps.

Head Bitch in Charge Cori Sue is lusting over big-ticket items like this Berta Plaid coat from Mackage and this darling SEA plaid skirt, both available on shopbop. If you’re shy about trying the all-over plaid look, this JOA vest is your perfect transition piece, especially in this fickle weather.

This herrington-bone quilted vest from J.Crew Factory offers a classic, polished layer to your fall ensemble. If you’re not willing to spend $100 on the J. Crew version, Bitch in the City Ally recently spotted this Old Navy dupe for just $34.

Baby Bitch Amanda is dying to get her hands on this Press Faux Pony Dress with its sophisticated cut that can take her from work straight to cocktail hour. We love the rich burgundy hue this season, as highlighted in our recent Lust List. She also is taking Cori Sue’s fashion tips and scooping up this mod-style shift dress in a fun purple.

Bitch in the City Emily is stoked to re-introduce flannels into her wardrobe, just in time for the Far Hills Horse Race next week! Her newest addition is this Patagonia Fjord flannel in Chrystaline. Another Bitch favorite is this dependable plaid shirt in an unexpected bright blue.

Amanda plans to make this J. Crew button-down in a deep jewel tone an everyday wardrobe regular. Ally’s fall staple also sources from J.Crew; she layers the tissue turtlenecks under her cable knits and capes.

There’s nothing that screams fall quite like a smart blazer paired with a comfy, oversized scarf, and Emily will be living in this schoolboy tipped version from J.Crew all season long.

HBIC Becca is loving minis with tights this fall, especially if they’re plaid. This Wells Grace skirt from Piperlime would pair perfectly with chunky knit tights and suede booties. Ally can’t get enough of this playful Alice & Olivia drop waist plaid mini to channel her inner Cher Horowitz this season.

In the way of handbags, Cori Sue always loves the brightness brought by a colorful crossbody satchel. In particular, she’s got her eye on this Tory Burch red mini tote or the cobalt mercer shoulder bag. Ally loves her existing black Rebecca Minkoff tote dearly, but wants to trade up for this autumn-friendly version in black cherry.

As a Brit, it’s no surprise that Becca is having a major Burberry crush this fall, and she’s pining for this gorgeous pink cashmere plaid scarfEmily’s coveting this luxe chiffon scarf necklace from Mignonne Gavigan New York, where detailed glass beading adds a unique pop to more muted fall colors. Alternatively, Ally plans to don this faux fur infinity scarf in a maroon shade to add instant glam to the dreary winter days ahead.

Every girl needs a pair of comfy fall smoking slippers. Becca can’t wait to step out on the time in these plaid loafers by Sole Society. Short booties with a small heel are another great comfortable option. We love these neutral Joie kicks or this budget-friendly Topshop pair with thoughtful pinstud detailing.

We’re all about knee and thigh-high socks to sass up your everyday look. Beware of stilettos or certain high heeled boots, we’re going for schoolgirl charm rather than streetwalker. Thigh highs look great with oxfords, medium-heeled loafers, or a classic riding boot. Try this over-the-knee, colorblocked set from Nordstrom to add some pep in your step.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, skin and hair are inevitably becoming dryer. This month we’re loading up on rich, moisturizing products to get ahead of winter dullness.

Put your best face forward this month with a luxe mask. Bitch favorites include the cult-classic Fresh Rose Mask and this fun pumpkin version by Peter Thomas Roth. We can’t help it, pumpkin everything is in our nature.

It’s no surprise that we’re pulled towards rich, autumnal hues for our manis and pedis. Our top Bitch picks this month are The Perfect Cover Up from Essie’s fall line, a cool gray Lady Muck from Butter LONDON, and the iconic Russian Navy shade from OPI.

To keep your tresses in check, Oribe’s dry texturizing spray is a must-have and keeps a blow out intact for days, despite gusty October weather.

Below are our October must-haves, pumpkin spice lattes not included.
