Now that I’ve had my boots in the ground in NYC for more than a year, I’m slowly making my way through my bucket list. Most bucket list items are related to epic meals and hidden speakeasies, but I do still have a few touristy activities to check off.
At the top of my list – getting up close and personal with Lady Liberty. I’ve heard rumors that the official tours are crowded, slightly miserable, and booked until August so I figured this goal would need to wait on the back burner. This was until I received an invitation to experience the Manhattan skyline sunset and a cruise around the Statue of Liberty from Manhattan By Sail.
A trendy, young group of what I assumed to be local media, bloggers, and event planners skipped aboard The Clipper City, a 158-foot long topsail schooner, which is the latest addition to the Manhattan By Sail fleet. It was luxurious and spacious, easily accommodating more than 100 guests. The ship was docked at Slip 1 in Battery Park so I appreciated the easy accessibility from the subway.
The Clipper City is equipped with a full bar and plenty of seating. We imbibed with nautical cocktails and bite-sizes appetizers on the vessel as we cruised around Manhattan. I’ve never seen the nighttime skyline of the city from the south, which was absolutely breathtaking. We had about thirty minutes of Instagram-winning photo opps of the skyline and then moved on to the majestic Statue of Liberty.
I was especially intrigued by the “Special Sails” offered by Manhattan By Sail such as a Craft Beer Tasting Sail, Jazz Sail, Burlesque Sail, Lobster & Beer Sail, LGBT-friendly Out at Sea Sail, and most importantly, Brunch Sail. The Clipper City’s smaller sister Shearwater can also accommodate up to 48 passengers for public sails and private charters.
We had a blast mingling, drinking, and snapping photos at sea with our lively skippers all evening. The Special Sails sound like a great way to see the city and have a blast with friends while avoiding the inevitable hoards of tourists. And who knows, maybe the Bitches will set sail over Bennys and Bloodys sometime soon. Bon voyage!
