Set on North Avenue beach, overlooking the skyline of the Windy City, was the first polo match sponsored by Qatar Airways in the United States.
Imagine a Kentucky Derby party, on a beach, that lasts all weekend. That’s essentially the Chicago Beach Polo Cup. This was a grand event with delicious bites, flowing wine, and of course, intense and competitive polo matches. Polo teams from Argentina, Wales, Australia, and the United States competed over the three day event, and finally, the Wales Polo Team was crowned the winner of the cup.
Adorned in preppy dresses and sun hats, the Bitches attended the weekend’s events, and took in the sights and games in awe—not only are these riders supreme athletes, but so are the horses. After chatting with some of the riders, we learned that many of these polo ponies are in fact retired racehorses. Thoroughbreds are known for their stamina and agility, and with polo being such an intense game, it’s obvious that the riders and horses are athletes in every regard. What amplified the intensity of these matches however is the fact that they took place on sand, as opposed to the standard grass turf.
When it comes to Polo, both women and men compete on the same teams. We loved the girl power aspect, and had fun interviewing Samantha Falbe, a player on the Chicago team. Not only is she a mom and full time business owner, she has been riding since she was young, and playing Polo for over 10 years. If only we all had hobbies that awesome!
Not only were the polo matches impressive, but so was the spectator section. Several large white tents housed modern lounge couches, fun photo backdrops, and of course, plenty of champagne. Our favorite part? Compared to other sporting events with assigned seating, the Polo Cup allows you to mingle throughout and get as close to the action as possible!
We highly suggest making plans to attend the Chicago Beach Polo Cup in 2017! To find out more information about the event, click on the official website, here.
