When it’s this frigid outside, my favorite thing to do is to nip to a local watering hole and cozy up to the bar with a good friend. It’s almost as good as snuggling up on your couch or in bed for the day, except someone is bringing you hot, fresh food and hand-crafted cocktails—which, in my opinion, totally beats a Seamless order.
My favorite spot is Commissary (full disclosure: Bitches Who Brunch partners with Commissary). And this Commissary-cuddling is exactly how I spent most of November and December in D.C., as the cozy restaurant and bar always has the lights dim, the couches comfy, and the bartenders at the ready. It’s like my winter home away from home.
The menu at Commissary is enormous, making it nearly impossible to ever get bored of the food. But the very best part of these winter hops is the restaurant’s happy hour specials, especially on Tuesdays. Plus, the lounge offers strong WiFi, so even if I’m working, I can cozy up there solo for the specials.
Every Tuesday Commissary serves up amazing food and drinks for just $2 a pop (all draft beers are $2!). Two dollar Tuesdays extends not just to those butts on the barstools, but to the entire restaurant and lounge. The best part is this special goes all night long on Tuesdays, and additional $3 to $7 specials happen from 3 to 7 p.m. every day.
Some of my go-to dishes are the steamed edamame, which comes with a trio of Sriracha, sesame and sea salts; the sesame ginger lettuce wraps, which are full of flavor and juices; and the flash-fried Kung Pao brussels sprouts, served with a spicy peanut sauce.
Tonight, Commissary is playing the State of the Union on all its screens, even its huge projector over the restaurant. And next month, the restaurant is hosting its biggest event of the year, the Oscars Party, where they’ll have 30 special in one night. Tickets are $49, get them here.
