Preview: Commissary’s Oscars Viewing Party

I thoroughly enjoy awards season especially when Fashion Police is involved. What’s not to love about seeing gorgeous gowns and my childhood crush, Leonardo DiCaprio, strutting down the red carpet? We all know the question goes beyond “who are you wearing?” The Oscars are also all about what you are eating and drinking while stargazing!

Commissary will host their sixth annual Oscars viewing party this Sunday, February 26th–and we got a sneak peak of the special red carpet event. This year–drumroll please–they will roll out a Meryl Streep theme in honor of the leading lady’s 20th Oscar nomination.

EatWell Beverage Director Kyle McNeel will prepare festive Streep-themed drinks such as the Florence Foster Jenkins Collins with vodka, St. Germain, grapefruit, ginger, and more. You can’t go wrong with quirky cocktails like the Death Becomes a Corpse Reviver, Devil Drives a Ferrari and Out of Africa. These delicious libations will be available all day beginning at brunch. That’s something we can certainly get behind.

After brunch, Commissary will transform into the set of La La Land, and host a red carpet viewing party starting at 4:00 p.m., with Happy Hour in full swing until 7:00 p.m. Executive Chef of The Bird and EatWell DC Culinary Director, Michael Bonk, developed an exclusive La La Land themed menu with an array of small plates and desserts. The special menu will take you on a culinary tour of the charming movie available during red carpet arrivals and throughout the show. Here are the dishes were dubbing winners:

The watts tower of beets, inspired by Mia and Sebastian stopping at Watts Tower while touring L.A. in La La Land. Beets stacked with mozzarella and garnished with fresh mint and basil only add to the appeal.

The Caldo de Pollo will warm you right up. The el salvadorian chicken soup hails from Sebastian and Mia’s first date at the notable Sarita’s Pupuseria.

Indulge in all things La La Land with the smoked pork loin, prepared with slaw, hot mustard, and pickled red onions. This dynamic dish is based on Sebastian getting a gig at the Smokehouse.

Last but not least, we had to try the funnel cake, appropriately named for the funicular ride at Angel’s flight. The traditional funnel cake is quite the showstopper.

Before you indulge in the La La Land inspired menu, celebrate Meryl Streep on Sunday morning, the woman who took “a broken heart and turned it into art.” The viewing party kick-offs at 8:00 a.m. with brunch and Meryl Streep movies shown all day on a full wall projector. They’ll be showing all of our favorite flicks including Momma Mia! And The Devil Wears Prada leading up to red carpet arrivals. You can also win prizes as Meryl Streep-themed games will be available at each table.

Reservations are recommended for both brunch and the La La Land-themed Oscars party. Click here to book your table
