Passport to Summer: El Centro

After living in the district for nearly four years, Richard Sandoval’s restaurants are some of my go-to spots for when I want a delicious meal with a lively ambiance. I’ve brunched at El Centro D.F. a number of times so Happy Hour there was only the natural choice. There are a few things a Bitch loves more than Brunch, and one of those few things is Happy Hour. Anyone that knows me would certainly agree!
El Centro D.F. is not your usual Mexican food and drink establishment. They pair unique flavors and fresh ingredients to create the perfect balance of sweet and savory. They have two locations, one is nestled right in the heart of 14th street while the second one is situated in the midst of all the action in Georgetown.

I met up with Amanda after work at their 14th street location. You can almost always find me on a rooftop during the summer but this was an exception. It was typical July weather – hot, humid and sticky, so we opted to sit inside. It was bustling with people looking to unwind after work.  El Centro D.F. offers a cool edgy vibe with dark wooden panels and colorful skull decor. We grabbed our passports from our purses and ordered the specialty cocktail they offered, a Grilled Pineapple Infusion. The Passport Program is a neat booklet that offers two for one drink deals at about 50 participating bars in DC throughout the Summer. You can use the little black booklet to experiment new drinks, explore the district and get stamped at each spot you visit.


We binged on chips and salsa until our drinks arrived. Because we couldn’t resist, we had to snag some of the handmade guacamole. Let’s face it chips are best paired with fresh guac. You can actually taste all of the individual ingredients including the cilantro and serrano pepper.

We started with our first round of drinks and fell in love with the specialty cocktail. Consider it a mature version of your classic margarita with a pineapple twist. A little sweet, a little salty and just right! The drink calls for grilled pineapple,  infused tequila, simple syrup, and agave topped with a salted rim. It was the perfect recipe to cool off on a hot summer night and discuss Bitch Biz. IMG_0045
