It’s no surprise that our New York editors are constantly searching for chic HR-approved work outfits—cause working is all New Yorkers do, right? Whether you’re checking your email during a particularly boring date or staying up late on a Thursday to catch up on a project you have to perfect, New Yorkers are nothing if not dedicated.
These Bitches definitely aren’t strangers to the hustle. Lindsay and Giselle both work demanding positions in their 9-t0-5 jobs on top of being our voices around town. That’s why they couldn’t resist collaborating with Of Mercer, a women-designed line of workwear that “women want to wear” to make their lives just a little bit more manageable.
Designed to make women feel empowered without a top-notch price tag, each piece will command the right type of attention whether you’re in your annual review or out at happy hour with your team. Think classic shifts and fashion-forward blazers in a variety of flattering prints and classic colors (yes, New Yorkers, they have tons of black).
Made right here in NYC, Of Mercer is creating office-appropriate pieces so we can think about having a work/life balance instead of worrying about what we’re going to wear. And honestly, what more could you ask for?
I recently made the transition from agency to corporation back to agency, which basically means I was in dire need of finding an affordable, chic go-to workwear brand.
Growing up, I thought a New York office meant women dressed in skirt suits, white button-ups, and boring kitten heels. Much to my surprise—and liking—most young professionals in my industry have the luxury of dressing relatively casual and incredibly chic.
Although Of Mercer may not be a no-brainer now that I’m back in the agency grind, its pieces are so versatile and easy to dress up for new business meeting or dress down for a quiet day glued to my laptop.
In this instance, I just couldn’t resist layering. When it starts getting chilly in the city, one of my favorite things to do is layer a classic button up or even a simple t-shirt under sleeveless dresses and jumpsuits. This styling trick instantly elevates an ensemble and often makes it easy to go sans blazer in an important meeting.
I love carrying this catchall clutch with me in my bag when I go to work, so I can easily fit all the necessities when running out the door for a happy hour meeting or Bitches Who Brunch event. The textured leather and simple gold monogram give it an added edge, which makes me feel a bit sassy.
Any New Yorker knows stilettos are a no-no when trekking down the city sidewalks to your next appointment. I swear by these Kate Spade chunky booties. More often than not, you can find me in them whether I’m at work or out for a night on the town. I wear them all year round by layering in a fun printed tight or chunky scrunched socks.
Finding comfortable but chic workwear is essential to my position. I never know when I’m going to be running from one side of town to the other. Of Mercer gave me the perfect solution to my woes with affordable, adorable, and appropriate office fashion pieces.
Real talk: My office is very casual—like people in trendy off-the-shoulder tops and/or jeans and T-shirts on a daily basis—the latter of which is pretty much my daily uniform. But sometimes certain situations call for a more polished look, and I love that Of Mercer makes pulling together a fashionable but professional work outfit as easy as pulling one item out of the closet—in my case, the Sutton Wrap Dress.
Cutting down on the morning stress of pulling 19 things out of my closet and leaving 18 of them on the floor (only to wear the first item I chose) is a major concern for me—I’m always late everywhere and 99% of the time it’s because I was spazzing over what to wear.
But since this dress is already so chic and eye-catching on its own—this blue color is the best, is it not?—it didn’t need a lot to zhuzh it up a bit.
Because I know temperatures in and around the city are about as predictable as our president’s next tweet, I brought along a denim moto jacket to pop on in case I felt winter coming (a.k.a the onset of my office A.C.—as annoying as a White Walker but less deadly, for sure). But during the warmer months, the long sleeves on this dress should suffice just fine.
I’m also a bit of a sucker for the current monochrome trend, so I went matchy-matchy with my favorite blue Henri Bendel bag and Sam Edelman sandals that are a pretty good match for my skin tone. The block heel on these sandals ensures that I can run back and forth from my office kitchen to my desk to get snacks all day long without a problem.
Yes, long sleeves, a great color, and a stylish silhouette are assets, but the most important quality about this dress is the most important quality anyone wants in anything they wear: comfort.
Made from a super-soft lightweight jersey, the dress glides on like a dream and didn’t leave me feeling fidgety like some items I wear that might be too short for my long frame, too tight across the shoulders, or too low in the chest. Of Mercer, this one’s a winner.
