Having survived my very first (brutally) cold winter, I was elated to be out and about in sunny Harlem this particular April Sunday. Jumping at the chance to enjoy this beautiful day in its entirety, brunch at La Bodega was a great start to a busy Sunday funday ahead with the other Bitches.
This was also the perfect date to catch up with one of my favorite cousins and treat her to a belated birthday feast at the upbeat, trendy Uptown joint.
Having enjoyed La Bodega’s nightlife experience in the past, I figured brunch would be nothing short of fantastic. We decided to start off with a round of their ‘unlimited drinks for 90 minutes’ cocktails; I went with the traditional mimosa while the birthday girl decided on the rum punch.
What intrigued me about the Latin American inspired hideaway is its flavorful take on their ‘bootleg brunch’ selections, from traditional brunch dishes like eggs Benedict to the chipotle chicken bowl with rice. Needless to say, we both had a difficult time making a decision on our dish of choice.
At last, I went for the shrimp and cheddar grits while my cousin decided on the sweet potato pancakes served with home fries, salad, and (of course) scrambled eggs with cheese. I was surprisingly impressed with their clever take on pancakes, which turned out to be both savory and sweet.
The shrimp and cheddar grits, which, by the way, is one of my all-time favorite southern dishes, turned out to be the perfect explosion of flavor. I especially enjoyed the hint of olives that accompanied the dish, which I’d never think to add to such a hearty selection. I’ll never look at shrimp and grits the same now, having enjoyed them with olives — such a nice touch.
The ambiance was energetic and busy — much of what I remembered it to be on a Saturday night. I may add that without a reservation, the wait can be a lengthy one, but it’s definitely worth it.
The Bitches say: A. Great service, tasty dish selections, and the ideal “happening” Uptown weekend brunch spot to bring a date, family, or a few of your favorite girlfriends.
