There’s now more and more support behind the notion that millennials prefer to spend their money on things that have meaning. While we think this is just peachy, it certainly has made gift giving more stressful than ever. Don’t worry, though, we’ve found some gifts that won’t break the bank, so you can buy your gifts and still afford to go to brunch.
For the Food Lover
We both know that D.C. is made for motivated, local foodies. There are tons of food companies based in D.C. but there are some that can make for a perfect gift for that foodie friend of yours. Olivia Macaron is a gift that can truly make anyone happy. The salted caramel and rosé macarons are good year round, but the holidays are a definite excuse to indulge in the seasonal flavors like candy cane and gingerbread.
Stella’s Popkern is something special. It’s the type of foodie gift that’s super rich and delicious, but doesn’t need to be devoured at once and is incredibly fitting for the winter months. This D.C. based popcorn truck is filling orders left and right
P.S. Snacks is a local, women-owned company that’s found a way to give edible cookie dough a healthy twist. This edible cookie dough is made from chickpeas, and without eggs, so no tummy aches!
Experience exotic flavors of the Brazilian rainforest with Harper Macaw Chocolates. With 13 varieties of chocolate bars and even bags of “Chocolate Drops” you can easily satisfy any sweet tooth. Harper Macaw makes a conscious effort to support conservation efforts so you can feel extra good about indulging. Plus, they wrap their treats in beautiful paper, making it perfect for gift giving.
For the Traveler
We are absolutely obsessed with these unique maps to highlight cities and think they are a fabulous way to commemorate your travels with some of your most memorable places you have been. These gorgeous wood-engraved city maps from Etched Atlas shows all the neighborhoods in each city with incredible detail. It’s a natural conversation piece and makes for a unique hand-crafted gift. ($59 unframed or $99 framed). All maps are engraved in beautiful Baltic Birch wood, bringing your favorite cities to life with crisp, vibrant detail.
Chris Cardi duffle bags are a perfect gift this holiday for your friend or family member who can’t stay put. These bags are super stylish, but super practical as well. This item is a must have this season. Similarly, Scout Bags has some awesome travel bags and other accessories that can help make any trip organized and stylin’ all at the same time.
For the Homebody
Candles in general are a necessity for the winter holidays. Handmade Habitat’s candles are even more of a necessity as they smell great, set the warm and cozy vibes, and of course, are based in D.C.
Local start-up UrbanStems not only offers beautiful bouquets, but also wreathes, poinsettias, thoughtful gift boxes and our favorite, the gilded dinosaurs.
I know your device is your everything. It’s your communication, it’s your alarm clock, and its your note pad/planner. Evermore Paper Co and Our Heiday has the cutest notebooks, stationary, and planners that make the perfect gift for your trendy, organized friend.
For the Fitness Junkie
With holiday treats all around, the gift of fitness is always appreciated. Why not give your best pal the gift of fitness? Memberships to D.C. Class Pass, Core Power, and Vida Fitness are always appreciated—and all these companies have gift card options for your giving convenience.
For The Boozy Babe
Rosé may seem like a summer only beverage, but we beg to differ. Rosé is the perfect pairing a solid cheese plate for a gal’s night in. Whispering Angel Rosé is our personal favorite, and it makes a great gift, especially when it’s mega sized.
We all have that friend that likes to drink a little too much. However, during the holidays, we all like to drink a little more more, so this is a good friend to have around. One Eight Distilling makes Rock Creek Whiskey, Ivy City Gin, or District Made Vodka that are all sold in the D.C. area. We recommend the Rock Creek Rye.
When it comes to drink deals, the Passport Program is the gift that keeps on giving. With this beautifully printed booklet, you can get 2 for 1 drink specials at Washington’s hottest distilleries and bars.
For The Fashionista
Some of our favorite lustrous items to wear are actually companies from right here in the District. Gaylia Wagner Design, 76ANDMAINE, and Emerson Fry are companies where you can find the latest styles that you can’t get at any old department store.
For the Guys
It’s always nice to have a man who’s looks good. TRUNK and DRAWER makes fashionable lounge-wear and undergarments that are perfect for holiday gift giving. These garments are so desirable, you might just steal it for yourself.
If your guy is preppy, local needlepoint brand Smathers & Branson is a must. The flasks and key fobs make excellent stocking stuffers. We love the quirky, festive flasks.
