Gallow Green Brunch Re-Review

Gallow Green has become a staple in West Chelsea and Meatpacking over the years. The Bitches have reviewed previously, but it was time for a re-review to see if the lush rooftop garden still deserves to be one of our favorites. We love The Lodge during the cold months and recently checked out Speakeasy Magick, one of the McKittrick’s immersive experiences.

As someone who’s generally claustrophobic, the elevator ride up is dreadful. Fortunately, after being temporarily blinded by the darkness, you’re transported to a stunning garden oasis.  Snapping a photograph under the glorious green arches and old tracks is a must for any visitor. Gallow Green still offers a similar brunch buffet with live music on weekends from May through October. Upon walking in you’ll be greeted by a band to elevate your experience as you enjoy your meal.

For a $50 fixed price (including of tax and gratuity), diners can eat to their hearts’ delight, from fruits and salads to carving stations and made-to-order omelets, while listening to MK Groove’s live set. Coffee or tea is included. Brunch cocktails are also offered to enhance the meal for an additional cost. “Bottomless” is not a word I’m looking for with brunch anymore, so we weren’t disappointed to see bottomless beverages are no longer offered with the fixed price. My brunch date and I decided to go with a ‘39 spritz with passionfruit, Aperol, and sparkling rosé. The cocktails were well-made for a standard rooftop price tag of $17.

Despite being a brunch buffet, service is still very much part of the experience. A server will check in with you throughout your meal. Now onto the brunch itself! There’s a variety of options beginning with sweets like pastries, fruits, French toast, granola, and more. Once you pass through, you’ll see fried chicken and an assortment of items in the carving station. If you’re a vegetarian like myself, some of what you’ll see is not ideal to walk past – like the suckling pig. There are some veg-friendly options in the hot buffet like the pee wee potatoes, frittata, moussaka, and green beans.

The cold buffet features an assortment of salads and a shrimp cocktail. As purveyors of food safety, we were pleased to see all of these items were chilled on a large bed of ice, especially in this heat.

My brunch date Kara loved the fried chicken above everything else. She felt the bacon was cooked well and the shrimp cocktail was flavorful. She enjoyed having some greens to balance out the meats.

After a late night out in LES, I needed something light and healthy. I tried several of the salad options and loved the red quinoa with shaved carrots, baby kale, and zattar dressed with lemon and olive oil. The heirloom tomato and pomegranate salad was outstanding with roasted lemons, mint, and cilantro. Everything was so fresh. Besides the salads, I enjoyed the potatoes especially for topping with the mini tabasco sauce bottles. As someone who is constantly in search of spice, this was very much appreciated. The French toast was also decent.

The Bitches say: five Champagne flutes.

We’re happy to report brunch at Gallow Green maintains its all star status. The beautiful rooftop and live music truly made our Sunday magical.

Gallow Green serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
