Staying motivated to workout when winter arrives is the hardest part about Chicago. This time of year, the only marathon we’re interested in doing is a Netflix one.

But we’re doing our best. Here’s how the Chicago Bitches are staying fit while looking cute this season, with the help of our favorite work out classes, fitness apparel, and a little inspiration from Jawbone Up fitness trackers.

Working out is something I thoroughly enjoy doing but struggle to make time for. I tend to have “on-again, off-again” relationships with gyms; I am totally consistent one month, and the next month I realize suddenly that it is the 28th and I have only gone to the gym once.

This is why I love to take different classes at studios all around the city as opposed to maintaining one gym membership. I am a cardio girl by nature, so while I used to have a monthly membership at one gym, I found myself wasting away $70 a month to work out on the treadmill and use the sauna, which really doesn’t make sense!

Thankfully Chicago has a bunch of great places to work out, and most importantly, challenge yourself! I have recently become addicted to The Barre Code, a great string of barre studios throughout the city that have a variety of classes to satisfy your every workout need.

Barre Code is an exciting and inspiring studio that pushes you to your limits and more, and never leaves with you that “never again” feeling that some intense workouts do. Instead you think “when am I coming next?”

SoulCycle is something I finally tried my bachelorette weekend with some Soul-loving girlfriends visiting from D.C. and I can say truthfully, the hype is no joke—SoulCycle is as great as people say, and understandably addicting!

During rough Chicago winters, it can be a challenge to motivate yourself to brave the cold and go workout; thankfully I have SoulCycle as my go-to, because I know that I will get there and sweat the whole hour and leave the class embracing the winter chill.

I never understood the “step” craze until I got my Jawbone. Before having my little wrist monitor I could not have cared less about how many steps I took, let alone anyone else. Now, I challenge myself every day to hit my mark.

Plus, what I love about Jawbone is all of the apps that you can use in direct correlation to the data obtained by the wristband—from tracking my sleep, to my daily caffeine intake, there is something to help keep you conscious of different things pertaining to your health, without getting all “big brother” on your every move.

My Jawbone Up4 helps keep me healthy and active, and it is awesome because I can link it to my American Express card and use it to pay on the go. It is the perfect gym accessory because you shouldn’t take much to studio classes, but often I want my wallet with me for money, and now with my Jawbone it is one less thing I have to carry and to worry about.

Okay, so I used to be the “old-college-tee” type when it came to workout gear. Paired with my favorite soccer shorts (Umbras, circa 2001), I was good to go. Then workout gear started to get cute, and I started to care. I love a good graphic tee, and I especially obsessed with our t-shirt from our collaboration with From Phoenix With Love.

I wear it over top of a racerback workout shirt, like this one from Lululemon, and take it off before I work out, and put it back on post-workout to wear to brunch! My Nike flywheels are great for doing different types of workouts, and are comfortable as an everyday sneaker.

I love my SoulCycle grab-and-go gym bag, it’s the perfect size to carry all your essential and fit in a tiny gym locker. My other favortie workout accessory? My Gaiam yoga mat. I use it to stretch every morning after a good night’s sleep, and it is the perfect mat for yoga.

Snap Kitchen Energy Boost Juice (c/o)

Chicago Bitches are kind of obsessed with SnapKitchen. They make it so easy to eat healthy on the go, and they also have a crave worthy menu! I love their chicken and sesame chopped salad, and by far my favorite cold pressed juice is the Energy Boost, with lime, papaya, watermelon, mint, and coconut water. Filled with superfoods to help you get the energy you need pre-or-post workout.

I love working out. I’m one of those girls who loves the gym, workout classes, and pushing myself until I am drenched in sweat. Whether I’m at Equinox or sweating it out in hot yoga, I strive to stay active and stay healthy.

When it comes to workout clothes, if I can’t move in them, I’m not going to stay long at the gym. Thankfully, Lululemon has a variety of nice options when it comes to activewear and one of my favorites is my Lululemon jacket.

It’s a perfect layering piece for when you need to add layers to brave the outdoors, or gradually take off as you warm up once you’ve made it to the gym. Stretchy leggings are also a necessity and my Athleta leggings are incredibly comfortable and offer serious flexibility.

SnapKitchen Chai Cashew juice (c/o) | SnapKitchen Spinach & Goat Cheese salad (c/o)

To fuel up for these workouts, I like to try to eat as clean and as healthy as possible. Thankfully, sugary beverages have never been something I’ve gravitated towards. I’ve always been a water girl, but sometimes I like to drink beverages that pack more than just a hydrating punch.

The SnapKitchen Vanilla Chai juice is not only delicious, but loaded with protein to help rebuild muscle after a workout. The salads at Snap offer the right kind of nutrients to help your body repair and rebuild after strenuous workouts and are just as delicious and fresh as the juices.

Being as active as I am, it’s unbelievable that I haven’t had a fitness tracker until now. The Jawbone Up3 is really a remarkable little gadget that keeps track of so much. Between steps, sleep, heart rate, meals, and activities, it’s possible to track every aspect of your life through this small wristband.

Jawbone Up3 (c/o)

One of the things Jawbone tracks is water intake. How, you ask? By measuring your heart rate! I have always struggled with drinking enough water and I’m always dehydrated despite how much water I consume. When your body gets dehydrated, your heart rate elevates and Jawbone senses that and sends reminders to drink more H2O. Being reminded by Jawbone’s updates to drink water might sound silly, but when I get engrossed in my work I find it hard to remember to get up and walk around let alone grab a drink of water.

The other aspect of the bracelet that I love is the sleep tracker. I’ve always struggled with sleeping and feeling well-rested, and this bracelet along with the app makes it easy to track your sleep cycles and levels of sleep (light, REM, and deep). After finding out that I do not get nearly enough deep sleep, I’ve changed my diet and eating times to help me sleep better. Jawbone is making it easier for me to stay healthy and requires minimal effort on my part. Who knew it could be so easy?
