ADMISSIONS begins its run at Studio Theatre from 01/16/19 – 02/17/19.
White liberals, brace yourselves for a no-holds-barred look at the hypocrisies of lip service without sacrifice. Everyone else, get ready to watch a family stocked with good intentions squirm as they face the gap between their words and actions. Playwright Joshua Harmon returns to Studio Theatre after the runaway success of Bad Jews with Admissions, directed by Mike Donahue.
Bill and Sherri are the white, progressive-and-proud headmaster and dean of admissions at Hillcrest, a mid-tier New Hampshire boarding school. Over the last 15 years, they’ve worked tirelessly to diversify the school’s predominantly white population—they’re up to 18% students of color. But when their high-achieving son Charlie’s Ivy League dreams are deferred, his reaction blasts open a deep rift between the family’s public values and private actions—especially when Charlie takes drastic action and Sherri finds herself trying to dismantle an oppressive system in her work life while securing its privileges for her son in her family life. Admissions is a no-holds-barred look at privilege, power, the insufficiency of surface-level advocacy, and the perils of whiteness.
