Being a semi-professional NYC bruncher, my out-of-town friends (rightfully) have high expectations for brunch rezzies when they visit. As such, I’m always on the hunt for the next big thing and am constantly scouring the internet for new openings in hot neighborhoods.
Katie, my best friend from high school, was visiting from Chicago and her sole request was breakfast bites near some great shopping. Once I heard the news that Matt Levine’s latest “market to table” venture in SoHo, Chalk Point Kitchen, was hosting its inaugural brunch service that very same weekend, the decision was made for us.
Brunch at Chalk Point Kitchen is technically a pop up called Mister Benedicts, which made it all the more “New York” for Katie. The restaurant space is airy and lush with white-washed wooden accents and plenty of greenery. Our friendly server, dressed effortlessly cool in typical high-end thrift shop style, promptly seated us in our corner table.
I immediately squealed and whipped out my phone for Instagram pictures when I saw an adorable chalkboard sign at my table customized with my name. This was one of the small touches that made our brunch so special.
Us gals had a lot to catch up on so we started with their housemade Bloody Mary and blood orange mimosa. My mimosa was refreshing and freshly squeezed and Katie’s Bloody was spicy just to her liking.
The cocktails were well-prepared, but the real stand-out came when the general manager brought us out a complimentary round of kale martinis. Game over. I loved those martinis so much that I hosted a night of birthday drinks a month later at the Handy Liquor Bar, downstairs from Chalk Point Kitchen, just to have more of those green cocktails. The blend of fresh green juice masks the taste of alcohol, which makes this drink dangerously easy to polish off, and makes you feel a little healthier about your indulgence.
We figured we should both order Bennys with seven unique types on the menu. I was torn between the spicy kimchi and Maine Peektoe crab, but decided on the seafood option per our server’s recommendation. I was served a generous portion of crab atop a Thomas English Muffin, spinach, local Lancaster County farm eggs, and hollandaise. This would definitely be a Becca-approved Benedict, which sings high praise. The girl knows her Bennys.
Katie’s avocado Benny was served classically with the creamy fruit, which was a decadent start to the day. She could only manage to finish half of the rich dish, but as good friends do, I helped her out with the avocado. Overall, we found my crab Benny more flavorful than the avocado variety, but both solid breakfast options.
We finished off our meal with a serving of the cinnamon buns for dessert. The dish was slathered in vanilla bean icing and came piping hot from the oven. The buns melted in our mouth, but our one complaint was that they stuck to the griddle after cooling, rendering part of the dish inedible. This probably was for the best since we were planning on trying on summer dresses and skirts for the remainder of the afternoon.
Brunch at Chalk Point Kitchen was everything I was looking for when catching up with an old friend – trendy, relaxed, and accommodating. We attended the first brunch serving at the restaurant so I can’t wait to see how this eatery grows.
