Tavern on Rush Brunch

“So, why are you in Chicago?” the taxi cab driver asked me. “Well, I’ve never been here, but I’m expanding our company here,” I replied. His eyebrows raised. “I just had a hunch Chicago needed some Bitches.” His eyebrows raised further.

Yes, Becca and I are working on the continued growth of Bitches Who Brunch to our third city, Chicago. And, because I love to mix business with pleasure, I headed to Chicago to interview a slew of potential Bitches, celebrate July Fourth with my two best friends, and also mark another year of my existence in this wacky world.

After two days of work, I stopped checking my email. We had an amazing weekend in Chicago, filled with lots of laughs, lots of wine, and lots of great food.

My best friend, Maureen, was raised in Chicago and is quite the foodie. Under her stewardship, we enjoyed great dinners at Bavette’s and Mercadito, champagne cocktails at Pops! Champagne and Public Hotel, breakfast at Beatrix, and more dining and wining experiences. When it came time for brunch, Maureen insisted upon Tavern on Rush, a Chicago institution.

Located in the Gold Coast, Tavern on Rush has an enormous, classic patio perfect for brunching. The classic American restaurant is traditional, with wood paneling, burgundy carpets, classic light fixtures and plenty of wine cellars. It’s a steakhouse with plenty of offerings that are appropriate for all demographics and all occasions—from families to dates and celebrations to a regular dinner.

Like the restaurant, the menu is enormous, offering classics, lunch and brunch options, and seasonal options. There are plenty of seafood appetizers, like crab cakes, shrimp and snow crab cocktails, oysters, and more. There are burgers of all sorts—steak, kobe, salmon, angus—pizzas, soups, salads, sliders and sides. By way of brunch, Tavern on Rush offers a variety of breakfast burritos, omelets, eggs and scrambles of all sorts.

There are also seasonal menu items, and of this selection the doughnuts caught my eye. We ordered one of each seasonal flavor: chocolate coconut, red velvet, and maple bacon. The maple bacon doughnut was absolutely out-of-this-world.

I also ordered a side of mixed berries, which were served in a lovely crystal vintage-looking parfait saucer. The saucer was filled with fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, and accented with a sprig of mint.

Miss Maureen is on an Eggs Benedict kick, so she selected the Tavern filet Benedict, while her beau opted for the smoked salmon Benedict. Both Bennys were beautifully presented, enormous, and served with a generous helping of sliced breakfast potatoes.

Lindsey felt like she was in need of something healthy, so she selected the chopped salad, an enormous dish filled with carrot, zucchini, tomato, asparagus, cucumber, mushroom, chickpeas, and sliced avocado, per her request, as well as the Balsamic vinaigrette on the side.

Meanwhile, I ordered the Eggs Lola, scrambled eggs with chicken apple sausage, chorizo, and spinach basil pesto. The dish did not look lovely, but it tasted amazing. Flavorful and hearty yet clean, the dish filled me up and had me going back for more bites although I was utterly full.

However, the breakfast potatoes served with the dishes were dull and boring—Lindsey, who is a chef, agreed with this Bitch.

The Bitches say: B+. A brunch institution in Chicago with great doughnuts and Bennys. The food is good, but the spot is a bit over-hyped and over-crowded.
