There are so many things about New York City that I love; the close proximity to world-class restaurants on every street, the large circle of loved ones separated by a few switches on Subway lines, and the abundance of activities that make the days here blur together. The list goes on, and there’s no question I take advantage of all that this wonderful city has to offer. That being said, I also very much appreciate the easy escape for a weekend away, and the close accessibility to so many other great places in the Northeast.

This month, our friends Kyle and Adriana invited for us a couples winter weekend in Lake George, located in the base of the Adirondack Mountains of NY. Thrilled to be trading in my winter blacks for mountain flannels, we fled for a quiet and much-needed two days away from the city slush. Between snowy adventures, outdoor ice bars, scenic drives, a lot of games, and spiked hot chocolates, we managed to fit in a brunch at our friends’ favorite spot- Caffe Vero.

Located on a delightful main street in Lake George, which was even more picturesque covered in snow, I was a fan before I walked in the door. We were greeted with the welcome smell of rich espresso as we walked past the impressive coffee bar to grab a table in the back room. The back room would have left something to be desired if not for the wood-burning fireplace, which compensated for the slight lack of character with the rest of the decor.

After much hype from Kyle, we immediately ordered lattes. I was very impressed with both the quality and the foam art, and finished my first so quickly that I had to order a second with my meal. They were amazing and up to par with any fancy roast I’ve had in the city. Happy to have a co-conspirator in my love for dessert, Adriana and I ordered a huge chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate croissant to start, which was the highlight of breakfast for me.

Paul and I were both swayed by the homemade bagels made from scratch on the premises, so we ordered breakfast sandwiches on different variations.  I sampled the rosemary-onion and Paul scarfed the sesame. They were satisfying, filling and something we would both order again.

Adriana and Kyle shared the peanut butter chocolate chip pancake special, which we expected to be outstanding (how can anything with peanut butter and chocolate not be?!), but sadly, it wasn’t as fabulous as we’d hoped. This may have been because we had very much satisfied our sweet quota for the day with our starters, but regardless, I don’t think the combination worked as well as it could have with their recipe.

I will always look back fondly on our snowy morning in Caffe Vero over wonderful lattes next to a crackling fire with great friends. I would recommend this breakfast spot to anyone who, like me, thinks a quality coffee is a necessity for any good vacation, and who seeks places that don’t scream “tourist attraction”.

The Bitches say: A. For what it is- a premier coffee roaster vacation spot with a delightful takeaway bakery counter, a sit-down back room, and enough quality homemade items to make it a stand-out.
