Some of the biggest names in the culinary world will grace the stage at the Metro Cooking Show next weekend, including Jacques Pepin, Top Chef judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, The Chew’s Michael Symon and Carla Hall and Next Food Network Star winner Jeff Mauro. But headlining the show is Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis. We spoke to the Italian beauty about her brunch style.
What is your brunch tradition?
One of my favorite things to do on the weekend is to wake up and go paddle boarding with Todd and friends. We work up our appetite and then come back and make a big brunch at home, fresh coffee included!
What’s your favorite brunch dish to eat?
Todd’s scramble surprise. There’s bacon or ham and cheese and arugula as well as whatever else he can find left over in the fridge. And a nice frisee salad to go with.
What’s your favorite brunch dish to cook?
Italian sausage egg bake. It has so many of my favorite ingredients all in one dish … and when it bakes, it makes the house smell amazing. Here’s the recipe if you want to try it for your next brunch.
What are the ingredients that should be in every brunch?
Relaxation, good company, and eggs!
Favorite brunch cocktail?
Strawberry, Lemon, and Basil mimosa for sure. It’s nice and fresh and goes with all the different flavors you can get at a brunch. Here’s the recipe.
Favorite brunch place on earth?
Home. But if not there … then Maison Giraud! Jade and I are crazy for their straight-out-of-the-oven croissants (she gets the chocolate and I love the almond), and Todd gets the Grandma scramble … Yep, we harass him for this but it is so delicious he doesn’t care!
Why is brunch an important meal?
I think what makes brunch important is its leisurely spirit. It’s inclusive, pretty much any ingredient is a go, as well as any guest you would like to enjoy it with—big group, small group, friends, family—everybody’s welcome! The whole idea is very Italian I think. It’s also a great reason to drink good champagne before noon.
We totally agree. What are you looking forward to most at the Metro Cooking Show in Washington?
I always love seeing my fans. And I am doing a demo of one of my favorite dishes … You’ll have to come see to find out what it is!
