As if we could love Joselito any more, the black and white tiled wine bar in Capitol Hill offers an affordable happy hour, aptly named Hemingway Hour. On a cold, rainy Thursday night we stopped by for a drink.
The name Joselito is an homage to the owner’s father who spent most of his time in Spain at timeless cafes enjoying long leisurely meals. The Capitol Hill establishment encourages you to do the same. You will quickly deduce that family is core to the restaurant’s ethos by the large accent wall decked with old black and white family photos and the convivial nature of the servers. The space is a chic, timeless wine bar that welcomes you with open arms, offering a happy hour specials that entice you to stay for a while.
Is this Seat Taken?
The bar was packed when we arrived around 6pm, but that’s OK because we actually preferred sitting at the cozy window seats. We spotted a few first dates, lady dates, and young professionals we can only assume were Hill staffers that made the short walk from work to indulge.
We certainly noticed folks that were posted up at the bar for the long haul with napkins on their laps and dinner menus at the ready. It’s a mixed vibe of a sophisticated happy hour crew and families looking for an early dinner. A nice respite from the jam packed watering holes by my office in Penn Quarter, where I sometimes seek a place to decompress after a long day at work.
The sangria here is bar none, and of course is offered on the happy hour menu. But on a rainy Thursday night we couldn’t help but opt for a big, full bodied glass of red wine. You can also opt for a beer or their cocktail of the day, which sounds like a perfect drink to order on their patio in warmer months.
Joselito offers a special bar menu with a selection of food from their full dinner menu and libations for just $6. I repeat, an order of the delicious mussels, Brussels sprouts, fresh sliced jamon, even pork tenderloin are only $6 a piece! And if any of the Hemingway Hour menu items don’t strike your fancy, you can order from their regular dinner menu for 20% off at the bar. Sounds like a win-win to us.
To winding down after work at a lovely wine bar. We’d be surprised if you didn’t stick around for dinner—either way don’t miss their sangria.
